Rebuilding LU and manual says use Perfect Seal a few times. Can you still get the stuff?

Yes, but frankly I don't use it much on gearcases. I use grease most places that call for it regarding sealing surfaces with O-rings. When I press seals in, I use red loctite. New gaskets don't need it unless the part surface is damaged. It does provide a fair anticorrosion coating and also makes a great never-sieze compound.

Johnnyrude and Merc dealers are the only ones I know that can get it, and few stock it. But a small container of it will probably outlast you if you don't do this for a living. It's also a great thread sealer around fuel and oil, and water you don't drink it.

Frankly I belive if Mercury, OMC or Bombardier didn't think it was nessicary they wouldn't recommend it or sell it.
Mercury number is 92-34227-1 or 92-80288A1
OMC or Bombardier is 508235
Sierra is 18-9070, Aqua Power is 3912, frankly the last 2 numbers are aftermarket and not the same stuff, they are infact number 3 form a gasket

Thanks for the quick responses. This is my first LU rebuild and I like to do things right the first time. My carb rebuild taught me that lesson. Ha! Something that I could not find online when I ordered parts was shims. Can you send me in the right direction. Don't know if I'll need any but this Merc is a 68.

Maybe we should know how deep a rebuild you are doing.If you think you need shims,does that mean you are replacing gears and or bearings?

Do you have the measuring tools to determine which shims to install?

Just trying to be prepaired if I do have to pull the prop shaft. Shimming is also mentioned in the water pump rebuild. Will use a feeler guage on pump rebuild.
Not sure I interpeted the backlash procedure. When I turn prop shaft to the point that the pinion gear does not engage the reverse gear there is about a 1/8 of a turn clockwise/counter in the prop shaft to drop in. My tolerence should be between .003-.005. Is this just a touchy feely thing or do I need something to measure with? Seems like this is just the cam.
