1988 GT150 -- convert VRO to 4 wire.

A couple of years ago I let my mechanic talk me into removing the failed VRO and premixing. I decided to put a VRO back on the motor and bought all of the requisite parts. The pump installed just fine, but the conversion from 3 to 4 wire is proving to be a challenge.

The instructions state that the 4th wire in the connector should be connected to the purple wire in the wiring harness. Well, there is no purple wire, but there are a pair of wires that are purple and pink.

How do I determine which of the existing wires should be connected to the new purple wire?

Also, when the VRO was removed, a brown wire was cut and terminated. The brown wire fans out to be 4 brown wires right after the plug. Does this wire need to be reconnected?

Thanks,
Kent

The 4th wire must go to the purple lead, look for the purple lead under the junction box cover. Otherwise, you cut into the harness ahead of the red main connector. The brown wire is part of the warning system, it also must be connected.

Hi R.J.

Apparently the colors in the wire wraps have bled as there is no solid purple wire. Two wires are purple and pink. Without being able to use "purple" as a guide, how do I locate the correct wire?

On the right side of the power head, there is mounted a black plastic wire holder with a snap in cover. There should be two purple wire's on I believe is the bottom terminal. Check, and get back to us.

Did you get the complete "VRO" kit with the purple wire lead, extra clamps, pulse limiter, pulse hoses, and an instruction sheet? Or did someone just hand you a pump?

Hi RJ,

There is a power strip as described. The purple leads are, in fact, the bottom terminal. The way the boat is parked in the garage I'm working primarily on the left side near the pump so I didn't see the terminal.

Hi seahorse,

I got the the full kit with a 3 to 4 wire conversion. The color bleed is in the wiring harness, not the new pump wires.

Now I just gotta figure out where the brown wire used to be connected. Do you know of a wiring diagram online that would show me?

Just in case someone else peruses this thread, the extra brown wire that needed to be reattached was the LOW OIL warning signal from the oil reservior.

Thanks again for the help,
Kent
