I have a 1994 mercury i/o that wont start. It turns over 4 revolutions and then pauses a second then turns over one more time. I know it runs i had it running. but cant get it started again. The boat seems to have a short in it some where. Where do i start w/ this?

Thanks
Brian

Welcome to iboats....:)
You don't say what model you have, but I would start with cleaning all of the electrical connections at the battery, starter & solenoid....
Make them shiny clean & post back with the results...
If that doesn't work there are some diagnostic procedures that follow, but clean, tight connections are required first.........JK

Corrosion build up, carbon tracking, and moisture in the distributor cap will cause similar problems. When was the last time it had a tuneup?
You say it has a short? ? ? ? ? Did a circuit breaker pop? A fuse blow? or wires melt down? If not, you don't have a short.
Could also be water in the cylinders, did you pull any plugs and look at them for rust or water?

does it turn over slow ?if it does turn over slow see if there water in the cyclinders ,if theres no water get the starter and battery checked...does it fire or pop when it pauses?if it pops/fires and then pauses is your timming right/dist set in the right spot? if it has points and condencer witch it prolly doesnt id replace them..a good tune up is always a good idea every spring.
