Assuming it's a conventional 175 and not a Ficht, any certified TCW-3 oil is suitable. But price does tend to reflect quality.

Don't necessarily agree. Price reflects overhead, which includes a lot beside the "quality" of the oil, most importantly advertising and promotion. That can more than double the retail price.

Do agree that any TCW-3 certified oil is satisfactory for the carbed version, but the FICHT version requires the oil specified in the manual.

Agreed. That's why I said 'tends". If that's a factory rebuilt, I'd go with their brand to protect any warranty. If somebody else rebuilt it, I'd go with their recommendation for the same reason. Don't forget to mix some in fresh gas too for break-in. Make sure there's no water in the bottom of the oil tank. Fresh gearlube, and a new water pump. How's the prop?

Yep on overhead. The price factored into something like what Castrol pays to keep John Force and those Nitro Funny cars on the road would make ya dizzy looking at the numbers. Oil is simply sold as is to all the various re-sellers, and they add the additive packages, which come in very few varieties. Ya get what ya pay for, to a point...then its for advertising the rest of the way.

Our local Wal-Marts all sell Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury Quicksilver oil, among others. Price depends a lot on where you buy it.

Ya know, now that you brought it up, I noticed that! Just didn't ring the bell as to where I was! Probably name brand at WM a heck of alot cheaper than West Marine.
