I am slowly collecting parts for my 350. I am looking at the new vortec bowtie heads.

Vortec Bow-Tie has all-new ports that are taller and narrower, the idea being to increase velocity while maintaining volume. The heads are available in "small-port" (PN# 25534421) or "large-port" (PN# 25534431) versions, with the small-port heads boasting 185cc intake runners and 65cc exhaust ports; and the large-port heads cast with 215cc intake ports and 84cc exhaust ports.
Out of the box, the heads come with 66cc combustion chambers and 0.450-inch deck surface thickness. GMPP tells us a camshaft with up to 0.530-inch lift will work with the heads, too. Assembled heads come with 2.00/1.55 valves, too. Additional details include mounting provisions for early-style valve covers or the later-style center bolt covers, as well as mounting holes for earlier six-bolt intake manifolds and later-style four-bolt Vortec manifolds.

I am going to roller retrofit and use quench pistons(about 9 to 1 compression). I got a set of HP exhaust manifolds and risers from Dennis Moore Performance(ebay).
These heads look promising.
What do you all think?
Cheers.

Re: 350 build

Vortec Heads are the Best Bang for the Buck there is for older Chevy V-motors.......

Stick to the 185cc Intake Ports,.....
The 215s will Kill your Torque,.... They'ed be Better for High-Reving Car motors.....

Also,.... Get yourself a Vortec Intake Manifold,.......
Even if these heads are drilled for the Old Style Manifolds,....
The Ports Won't line-up properly,+ Again, you'll be Loosing potential HP.........

I was hoping you would reply. I do intend to get the small-port version. Better low end torque i figure. Yep will also get vortec intake.
Thinking of the XM264HM cam. I will be using the boat to pull and want a fair amount.

Re: 350 build

GM builds those heads all over the place. One is from Canada the other from Mexico. Not trying to make any kind of point, just thought it was interesting that the guy on ebay ordered two heads and got one from each country.

Re: 350 build

That's a Great Choice,.......

You Could get by with the next 2 or 3 Down that list,+ Probably not get into Reversion Issues,.......

But you'll be getting near the Ragged Edge of Reliability.........

Sure sounds like you've got a Solid Plan to build a Great Marine Engine.............

The only other Thing I suggest,.... Is to have the rotating assembly Balanced........
Blueprinting is abit Overboard,...
But, Balancing will give you a Smooth motor,+ It'll just Last Longer.......

I Think that Reel Poor is a CrackerJack Chevy Mechanic,..........
Maybe He'll stop by,+ toss out a few Comments......

Re: 350 build

What kind and size of boat?
What type of drive?

Might make a difference in some of your choices of performance parts.

Re: 350 build

That boat should plane out fine even with a stock 350. Given the bowtie vortec over standard vortec, must be going for max WOT performance. What is the estimated prop shaft hp? around 350? That engine combo might be enough to push the drive a couple a hundred rpms past 5K. Peak HP at 5200-5300 rpms?

What was current WOT mph? I am guessing you are trying to break the 60mph barrier. You might want to consider a pair of smart tabs, to help control the high speed porposing you will likely get.

:$ Opps! I see I missed your manual tabs in the pics. Sorry.

Re: 350 build

WOT at 4180rpm at 3000ft elevation is 49.5 with 23" prop.
WOT at 4400rpm at 3000ft elevation is 47 with 21" prop.
I am also in the midst of new stringers, floor and getting rid of the hull hook(there is ALOT).
I Imagine it will cook after all is finished. I am looking at trying to get 60+ and still be able to have enough low end grunt for skiing.

Ayuh,........
Getting the Hull straighten out will Help,..... Alot......

60mph is Awlfully Fast,..... If you Don't make it, you'll be Really Close to it.....

What about Fuel Induction,..??......

I've fallen in Love with the Merc./ Weber/ Eldebrock Carter AFB Clones,.......
That,+ a Strip Kit to Tune it,..........
Hey,... Tony,.........
Don't You have 1 of those kicking around,..??.....

Probably going to be need'n a New Prop Too...............
