I have been trying to come up with sumpin' to trump roscoe's bribery, and I think I finally hit on it. We are still in a drought over here, but I figure I can guarantee as much water as you need to float your proverbial boats . . .

I am proposing the weekend of April 7 & 8 although we can definitely discuss that. I still think Lake Havasu offers:

a) the most central location for the "western" contingent

b) the best flexibility for small and large boats. Mead can be really nasty for smaller boats and Mohave simply sucks . . .

c) lots of options for lodging and camping

I will start to resurrect some of the links etc. from last year. I plan to secure Friendly Island (aka Beaver Island) again, although that will take some luck and help from my BIL. These particular sites (boat accessible only) cannot be reserved, but there are lots of other camping options both State managed and private.

Friendly Island

This might seem early in the season to some, but any later and camping can become really uncomfortable (hot). It is more of a "family" place this time of year, and I kinda liked it as a kickoff to the season last year. Suggestions are welcome though.

Can I ride and imbibe on your boat QC, Havasu is way too far to haul my demon Gulfstream?:p

It cost me 270$, round trip, just to get my boat and Suburban to Shasta and back this summer.

That's not to mention my first day's fill up (97$) for being too happy on the throttle of my new 4 bbl roller 5.0 motor.

Yeah Skinnywater you're probably right. I guess I was thinking more SouthWest when I said "central" above . . . This is a big darn country!! Shasta is a 12 hour tow for me which is probably what Havasu would be for most of you northern guys . . . Shasta is probably 18 Hours for the Arizona guys. Powell is probably no good for anybody but Admin 5 :) There is nowhere perfect for sure. It would be great to do both I guess, but I have two selfish motivations for Havasu:

1) My boat is there . . .
2) Island campground that the kids are insisting we do again . . .

I have only been to Shasta once. It was in Sept. and we got hit with a very early and long storm. Rained for 4 days straight. Anyway, I know that is not the norm, but I am guessing April is real early too. What is the best time of year for Shasta?

7th and 8th sound good to me. I didn't know where Shasta was so I Googled it. Great looking lake, but dang it's a haul from Arizona. I bet it's still pretty nippy up there in April too. Havasu won't be swimming temp yet, but air temp should be in the 80's at least, maybe 90's.

I can tell you when the best time wasn't! First week in August 2006. It was 115 deg all up and down the west coast from Shasta to Woodland Hills. We burned more 6$ gal gas runnin the generator for the A/C than we burned running the houseboat.

Actually I liked the heat but my Northwestern Compatriots just folded up. I think the lake water must have been what it is like in Heaven. It had the smoothest water that I have ever seen on a big lake and it was kinda like returning to the womb when you were in it. Ahhhhhhhhh!

Yes, very nice for camping. Any later and camping can be pretty uncomfortable.

Just for your information and not even remotely trying to railroad your plans;

April and May is a real nice time in N. California. Daytime temps are well into the 80's, sometimes more, sometimes less, sometimes it's dry, sometimes it's wet. As it is springtime these are the months that are the most unpredictable. The water is high, and water temps averaging around 70 deg.
April and May on Shasta has given me several 80 fish (SM, LM, & Spotted Bass)days.
While a random day or two in May or June can see 100 deg.+ July through August will get you temps over that consistantly. September is nice weather but count on smoke and haze from some wildfire that is going on somewhere.
That 4 day storm in Sept. you experienced was most definately a freak occurance.

On a side note, Lake Tahoe is about as good as it gets of any lake in midsummer. However, this lake can go from glass smooth to 4' waves in an hour.

Definitely needs a bump and some discussion.

In my infinite wisdom, the date I selected happens to be Easter weekend . . . Not an issue for me at this point, and it is a decent compromise of early and late for camping weather.

The Northwest guys are making us look bad, so we need to at least ship or get off the boat . . . Thoughts? Comments? Attendees?

Maybe we need pics . . .

Yeah KK, well I am still going . . . I will update later today with more links, locations etc. I am locked in with kids schedules etc. Last year we met on the Saturday at the Nautical Inn courtesy docks. I am going to have to do some Mutley type digging, but all of the links, locs etc. are on last years thread . . .

Pretty Quiet here . . . Reference info for anyone that’s planning to go. Still the 7th and 8th at Lake Havasu, with a no pressure meet at The Nautical Inn courtesy docks on Saturday the 7th at noon. As long as my BIL is successful again, we will be on Friendly Island (aka Beaver Island)

Havasu%20Camping%20resize%202.JPG

The Nautical Inn and The London Bridge Resort for hotels on the water. There is also a lot of developed camping on the Island (peninsula) itself. Camping on Friendly Island is outhouse, fire pit, awning type thing and a table. Only accessible by boat, which would be fun for those who like that type of thing and is another reason that some may not want to do any driving by car once situated.

GPS coordinates for Friendly Island: N34 25.226 W114 17.469

GPS for the Docks in front of the Nautical Inn: N34 27.521 W114 20.866

Hotel Link: Expedia Havasu Hotels

This quote came from here: Havasu site

Boat-in Camping: There are 125 lakeshore campsites available along the Arizona side of Lake Havasu, from Lake Havasu City to Parker Dam. Most sites have a picnic table, shade, BBQ grill, pit toilet and trash can and are available on a first–come-first-serve basis. These are fees sites.

Friendly Island is one of these. The correct name is Beaver Island, so refer to the map above for location.

Another campground (accessible by car): Crazy Horse

I recommend using Lake Havasu Marina to launch: Havasu Marina

Left on Marina Rd. Nautical Inn is next left. Not sure what the red star is, this is from the Marina Website.

I will post contact info closer to the date.
