Synchronizing linkages

I recently installed a rebuilt powerhead on my 1973 115Hp Johnson. To do the installation, I had to remove all of the ignition, fuel, and electrical components. I have just about everything back together at this point and have been reading in my Clymer & SELOC manuals about how to sync the linkages.

Is this a difficult process? Before I ever start the engine, how can I tell if they are set appropriately? When the remote lever is pushed forward, the lower unit should go into gear and the throttle should increase. I can see how this process works by messing around with it, but how do I know when the settings are right so that I do not damage the lower unit or keep the motor from reaching full throttle?

Re: Synchronizing linkages

Best bet is go to Ebay right now and enter 320027482358 in the search window. It does not matter if you use Evinrude or Johnson manuals, because they are the same engine.

The OMC service manual has model-specific information.

Re: Synchronizing linkages

Ezeke is right....the whole procedure for sync and link is just to long to post.

I know it sounds like a broken record but, getting the OEM service manual is THE one best thing anyone can do for their engine.

Re: Synchronizing linkages

Thanks tschamp,

It looks like these directions are much easier to follow than the ones in the SELOC or CLYMER manuals.

I'll also look into getting a factory manual.

Re: Synchronizing linkages

It'll probably be a few weeks before I can get to mine. I've got the powerhead installed along with the rebuilt carbs, but I'm fixing some other issues along the way while I have the thing apart.

Stay in touch, I'd like to know how everything goes.
