I have a 1997 Johnson 200hp Ocean Runner that always seems to die when I go to put it in reverse. It has new fuel, new plugs, and a new fuel filter. When I pull up to the dock at it dies when I put it in reverse. Sometimes it even dies when I put it in forward. Is my idle too low? What should the idle be set to? Is it a timeing problem or something else? Other than that the motor runs well and has low hours. (less than 200)

idle set to low, most should idle at 750 in gear. if it won't check compression.

You are dealing with a shift assist switch, located on the engine just behind the shift linkage.

When you go to shift, the switch disables one of your cylinder banks. This makes shifting easier, but unless everything else is near perfect it can cause the condition you are experiencing.

Many owners have disabled the shift assist switch: Try it both ways and decide for yourself.

Sometimes the switch fails or is not set correctly. If this happens and the idle is set for it, the motor can be very hard to shift.

Plt I am having the same problem. I have checked quite a bit of this motor and am still in the dark. I am thinking about trying to disconnect the shift switch.

did you ever find out your problem ? if so I would love to hear the outcome.tnx toghog:D

hello, this is my frist post. i had the same problem on my 200 hp. it came to be corrison round the teflon bushing located at the forward , lower corner of the engine where the swing linkage passes through the block. there is a grease zerk there. corrision was squeezing the bushings real tight . i could see a 500 rpm drop everytime i would shift. after about a year later it would die while i shifted. after removing the corision, i never saw a rpm drop again. swifting was so smooth. you can check it by disassembling the linkages near the shift switch and swinging the swing arm by hand . :)

I also cleaned the pivot point where the kinkage bolts on.I also made sure the motor shifted fine without the cables. It did.

Now I am thinking about un hooking the shift assist switch to see what happens. Is there anything I need to be concerned about when I unhook this switch ? I do not want to harm any other parts. tnx toghog
