AQ 125A Timing questions

Ok, here is the deal, I have a Bayliner with an AQ 125 engine mated to a 280 outdrive. She starts and runs great out of the water. The problem starts when in water with a load. At about 1/3 throttle she starts to sputter and ceases to gain any speed. At first I thought fuel issue and changed the filter with no result. Now I am thinking timing. I pulled off the distributor cap expecting to see points and instead found what I believe is some kind of electronic conversion (part number 05S V4). What I need to know is with this kit are you required to run a different coil, because this set-up still has the original part number. I am sure I can figure this out but any expertise that can save me a couple of bucks on parts will be greatly appreciated.

Re: AQ 125A Timing questions

Welcome to iboats, schow31. Sounds like it could be timing. Also, I think some people here have said something about an in-line resistor that suppose to be removed when you make a conversion to electronic. This would be in the wire that use to go the points. I have the same exact engine, so I'll also be waiting for an answer from someone who knows what they're talking about.d:)

You started out questioning timing but jumped to points/electronic points.

Assuming the electronic ignition is working ok, have you looked at the timing yet to see if it is advancing properly over RPM?

Have you done other basic tune up items like plugs, wires, distributor cap...etc? How old is your fuel?

I have not yet, all of the basics look to be in good condition. I will change them I just want to avoid the frustration of striking out if an improper elctronic part was installed on the motor.

There is a lot more to the fuel system than just a filter. My bet is you have an air leak in a line or fitting somewhere between the engine and the fuel tank.
Something as simple as loose or wrong hose clamps, cracked hoses, even a plugged fitting on the fuel pickup tube or antisiphon valve can cause your problem.
It's really easy to check out with a gauge. Read this thread.

Ayuh,.......

Seeing that it Does Run,.....
I'd leave the Ign. Alone,+ Find the Issue with the Fuel Delivery........

If what Don mentions Isn't the Problem,.....
I'd tear into the Carb,+ See if there's Crap in It......

To the best of my knowledge,....
When an Electronic Ign. Conversion is installed,.... The Coil stays the Same......

Re: AQ 125A Timing questions

Thanks for the input. I will check the fuel pressure and carb for sure. The only reason I am so focussed on timing is that it seems like it does not advance. It runs through all ranges great with no load. What kind of pressure am I looking for psi wise and where is the best place to get the reading?

Re: AQ 125A Timing questions

4/ 6 psi,..... At the Carb Inlet, is a common # to look for on Every carb I've ever done.........

I don't do Volvos,..... but,.....

Are there any Flyweights mounted Under the rotor,..??...
On some Dist.s there's an advancing mechanism that must be Free of Rust,+ able to move against the springs.....

Btw,......
What the motor does in Neutral, Without a Load,.......

Means Absoluting Nothing............. Diagnostically speaking.......

I'd grab a Carb Kit for that,+ Do some Cleaning,+ Checking...............

She starts up cold with no problems what so ever and will even Run up great on the trailer. It is not until she gets on the water that I have a problem. I will check out the fliyweights. I know I can physically advance it by turning the rotor by hand and it springs back as it is supposed to.

I Believe That should cover it,...........

Thanks for the input. Looks like I will pick up a kit and check some lines and pressures.

Bondo, looks like third time is the charm.
