I live in a 2 year old house and now am hearing the pipes rattle when shutting the water off from the kitchen sink or when the refrigerator solenoid closes after using the water. Also when the dishwasher shuts the water off. This is something new. I Never have noticed it before. Could it have something to do with very cold weather?

We have had a stretch of weather in the teens and single digits.

Being that its two years old and just starting the hammer I'd say it already has arrestors. Shut off the water suplly and drain everything you can. This will allow the arrestors to refill with air and work again.

I'm with KB on this one.Periodically have the same situatation here .About every three years or so I have to shut off the water supply to house and remove the toilet supply valve farthest away from water supply and drain the line and reinstall valve. My guess is that the expansion deadhead has a minute pin hole that allows air to escape enough to eventually result in water hammer.

You can get a hammer arrestor that has a rubber bladder inside, that will last a long long time. Well, I think you can still get them.

I believe I have one of these arrestors. There is a small tank, looks like a BBQ propane tank hooked to cold water line above the hot water heater. I will drain the pipes and see what happens. Thanks!

If you have a basement and the pipes run in the floor joists chek all of the hangars holding the pipes up. These normally look like big loops of very thick wire that are driven into the joist with a loop in the bottom to hold the pipe. If it is just now making noise some of the hangars may have loosened due to vibration and so on. Good luck.8)

We have had a stretch of weather in the teens and single digits.

Had the same problems, hammer when the kitchen faucet is shut off, dishwasher shuts water off, clothes washer shuts water off, icemaker solenoid shuts off, etc. Have a hammer arrestor on cold water line and problem would occur every 6 months or so. House is only a few years old. Turned out to be the copper tubing coils feeding the fridge icemaker. There are several large loops behond the fridge to allow you to pull it out from the wall for cleaning, water shutoff, etc. If the copper coils touch each other when the fridge is pushed back you'll get the hammer noise from the slight pulsation when water is shut off somewhere. One solution was to replace the copper with reinforced plastic tubing but I decided to stay with the copper and make sure the coils don't touch.
