Hello all,
I'm looking for some details of an outboard.
Its an Evinrude 50hp (70's model?)
Some of the numbers I have are...
Engine #: A0059017 (found on the upper rhs of crankcase chamber [welch plug])
Serial #: 59017 (found on rego papers).

Any idea of the year? I have tried to go to www.evinrude.com but cannot find the service centre and 'dock talk' links.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Just thought I'd add,

Its an electronic shift (push button for forward/neutral/reverse).

I'd also like to know what fuel ratio to use, and what oils (both for the fuel mix and the 'leg' oil).

Thanks again.

Re: Help needed to find year on an Envinrude 50hp.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I can narrow it down. 1971 & 1972 were the only years for electric shift 50s. I had a 71. They have a loud bark when running on the muffs. Louder than most other thru-props.

1971 model numbers 50172, 50173
1972 model numbers 50202, 50203, 50272, 50273

You'll notice that the models numbers are basically paired. The lower number is a short shaft model, the larger a longshaft model. 1971 models were all electric start. Apparently 1972 offered a manual start option. I'd assume the 50272 and 50273 are the electric start models.

You can probably nail it down by going to www.johnson.com and go through the parts tabs to find diagrams. Comparing hood decals should give you the year.

www.johnson.com
click on PARTS & ACCESSORIES
click on Literature
click on Find Evinrude Engine Diagrams after bookmarking the page
The rest appear to be popups, so have your popup blocker shut off:
There will be a page asking for your e-mail. Just click View Parts Catalogs
click Go next to the drop-down menu, Evinrude should already be showing
click on the year
click on the horsepower
click on the model
you're there :)

50:1 using any outboard 2-stroke oil, 1 pint to 6 gal.
I use synthetic gearlube in my electric shifts.
Hypoid is too thick and makes shifting sluggish.
Premium Blend from any Johnnyrude dealer, or click or click.

(Mercury's Premium Blend is Hypoid)

Thanks for your help, I'll do a bit of investigating through part numbers and see if I can come up with an answer.
I think the 59017 number is proving to be a red herring. And thanks for the welcome d:)
