Ok, second time typing this. I knew better. :)

Anyways. I have a mess with my power trim and wiring. I'm trying to sort it out and think I'm really close, but need a few nudges. The diagram below describes how I believe things to be hooked up.

Here's my questions. What does the trailer button do? The wire that comes off (or goes into) both the tilt switch and trailer button, where does it go? The wire off the trailer button, where does it go? Is everything else looking right?

Thanks,
Timothy

Yes it's alright the trailer button wire runs back to the cyl with a limit switch on it and then is jumped to the blue wire at the solenoid (ussually that part don't work on a outboard, you will probably have to free the switch up or replace it to make it work right
Sorry I'm wrong the blue wire from the trim switch is the one that runs through the trim limit switch not the trailer wire

Laddies,

I appreciate the response, but I need some more help. First question I need help clearing up, what does the trailer button do?

Second, so the trim up runs from my throttle switch to the limit switch on the cyl, then to the solenoid?

Third, is the incoming wire to the trailer button and trim switch, is that a positive lead?

Thanks,
Timothy

Tim, The trim button works only when the trim limit switch is closed. When the OB trims to limit, the switch opens, stopping the trimming. The trailer switch should trim the motor all the way up. On the OB, the trim limit switches tend to break. We usually just bypass them, making the trim and trailer buttons have the same function.

Ok, to add to this. On my motor (1985 mid section with 1985 power trim/tilt).

The trim down button works great, but the trim up doesn't. to trim up I have had to use the trailer button. What wires do I have switched???

I'll go tomorrow and look at the wire colors coming from the controls and what's on the motor.

Craig, I have two different sets of colors from switch to trim motor. I had to use a voltmeter to figure out which is which. Put your negative lead on a ground wire. Press the trim up and test the wires till you find the one. Hope that helps.

Re: Mercury Power Trim Motor & Wiring

I have a 1995 Merc 90hp that will not trim up far enough for my boat. It is a 1985 Glasstream bass boat and the transom is made with alot of angle into it so when the motor is at full trim, it is pretty much straight up and down and does not let me get enough boat out of the water for good top end. It does tilt fully when not running. Mercury stated to me this was a safety feature. I have tried to track down the wiring but cannot see where any external limit switch might be tied into the system. It seems to be just the 2 relays, pump's 3 wires, and the up/down wires from the controls. Is there any way to get more available trim out of this unit? What keeps the trim pump from going higher when under way?

Scott, If that motor has the three trim cylinders and only one tilts the motor the max trim is where all three cylinders are holding the motor.

There are transom wedges available which alter the vertical position of the transom clamp. These would allow you to install the motor in a true plumb position.
