i am about to buy a carter carb off a mercruiser setup and i need to find out what size it is. its used and the guy has no info on it but its black and looks new like it came off a newer boat. its going onto a omc ford 5.0 that im switching to a 4 barrel intake/carb. its got a holley 2 barrel right now. i know a decent amount about carter/edelbrock and like them. the model number is 3251 9600S . any help would be great. do you guys think 150 shipped is a good price??? i know i have sold used edelbrocks for that price that were not marine. any suggestions on intake?? high rise dual plane??? thanks

Flip it Over,....

The 700/750cfms are a Square-bore.......

The 600/650cfms are Larger 2ndaries,+ Smaller primaries.......

Seems to Me, My Spread-bore 600/650cfm is tagged with a 9600#......

A Buck,+ 1/2 is a Pretty Fair price,.... Not a Steal, but a Good Deal.......

If you've got any Spare Tuning Parts left over from those Edlebrocks,......
They'll come in Handy,...... They're the Same Carb Parts Wise.......

And,.... A Dual-plane, in a Mid to Hi-rise will make you some Good Power.........

If it is off a newer Merc, then it is not a carter, it is a Weber carb. Look at the tag on it and find the Merc part # and I can tell you what engine it is off. Going 4bbl on that engine may cause problems such as bogging since the cam i9s designed for a 2bbl.

Well, I don't have books to look at, but very sure it is a 600/625 cfm unit. Weber rated them 625, Edelbrock 600. As bondo said, the primary butterflys should be slightly smaller than secondaries.

One concern I would have, is this one of the specialized Merc Webers, that have two step rods? If so, you may only be able to get rods and jets from Merc. I think the 9600 was used on pre-vortec 4.3LX, and does not have the two step rods. Try finding out on MercuriserParts.com.

regalman4925,....

Mercruiser has only used 2 versions of these Carbs....

See my post above to tell Which 1 you're looking at......

Flabum is Wrong about the Cam Change.......
There's No Difference between the 2bbl. Cam,+ the 4bbl. Cam......

But he Is Right about the nomenclature on the Carbs.....
Mercruiser uses a Weber branded Carter Clone,.....
But it's Still a Carbon Copy of the Edlebrock branded Carter Clones, Known as the Edlebrock Performer,........
In the Marine Version of course......

Re: carb help please!! carter mercruiser numbers

I did a quick check, and the 9600 was used in '93-'96 4.3LX Gen II. This was the V6 prior to the vortec head version. This carb has a stove type choke and has the more "standard" one step rods. I would expect the Edelbrock tuning kit works with this carb.

The weber used on the vortec version, has the two step rods and electric choke. The standard edelbrock tuning kit wound not work with this one.

Re: carb help please!! carter mercruiser numbers

where did you find that info? so should i go with this or should i just buy a new carb? i am also looking at a holley 4160 600 cfm elec choke. i am thinking i would like the holley more because my boat already has a holley on it and i assume that all of the linkage will match right up. anyone have a 600 cfm for sale? cheap? ..............

I have a 4BBL Weber on EBAY right now...........gonna end in less than 2 hrs.

I think it's a 750.............don't know if that's too big for a 5.0.

Regal,

MercruiserParts.com: V6 List http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=V6

4.3L 93-95 GenII: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=801874+93

4brl Weber: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...g&inbr=1599&bnbr=100&bdesc=CARBURETOR+(WEBER)

Online Mecruiser V6 service manual: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/18/18covr2.pdf

This carb will work on a SB, but will need to be rejetted, and different rods. That is part of the tuning kit. I don't think you would want to run the stock 4.3 jetting. It is probably too lean for SB. For a starting tuning point, use some of mercruiser rod/jets setting for a SB.
