Fellas,

Tomorrow I will be installing a new waterpump/impeller and im not gonna lie... I am pretty scared about taking the lower unit off as I have never done so before. I do have the manual and im gonna read it over twice before doing anything. Do yall have any tips or recomendations?

Out of curiosity, how long should this process take me?

You will get more and better responses if you share the year and hp of the engine.

Nearly everyone doing this for the first time fails to disconnect the shift rod. The lower unit cannot come off unless that rod is disconnected.

Its a 1986 Evinrude. 70 hp. I have done alot of searching and seeing where everyone is getting stuck and man... that kinda made me more un-easy seeing how many peoples lower units were stuck and wouldn't come off :(

Nothing to fear except fear itself. Follow the manual and you won't have any problem. Put some lube on the water tube seal and drive shaft splines before putting it back together.

What kind of lube do you use there?
I was going to do this myself as well. What tools will I need for this job? How heavy are the lower units and will I need another body there to help? I have a 140 HP.

Not to hijack this post, but just curious.

airxsteel

You will need basic hand tools (Some long reach needle nose pliers to position the shift shaft will help ). High viscosity lower unit lube will do the trick. Another set of hands will help greatly with putting the lower unit back on, as they are fairly heavy...

Use Moly Lube on the top driveshaft splines and not too much. There is too much heat and friction for other lubricants. That's why Moly Lube is included in all of the OEM water pump kits.

Don't forget to mark the position of the trim tab before you remove it.

Airxsteel -- If you don't already have one, the best tool you can have for this or any other job on your engine, is a service manual specific to your engine. It saves time, prevents frustration, and helps prevent screw ups that end up costing many times the cost of the manual.

Re: Water pump/ Impeller installation

Ok fellas. Unfortunately I didnt get to do this task today due to the fact that I didnt realize I need all these different lubes and what not. I went to the boat stores around my area and none of them had what I am looking for. I am looking for these things...

* OMC Gasket Sealing Compound.
* OMC Adhesive M.
* OMC Moly Lube.
* OMC Needle Bearing Greese.

I have tried the search but im sure yall know, that thing doesnt give you half the answers you want most the time. Can I substitute any of these products for anything I might be able to find at Autozone or Advanced Auto parts? Thanks in advance...

Re: Water pump/ Impeller installation

You can substitute some aviation liquid gasket sealing compound (permatex or locktite) for the omc gasket sealing compound. Any auto parts store.

Adhesive M is a little harder to find outside of a dealership, and is replaced by a 3M product. Do you really, really need it?

Moly grease is also available at any auto parts store. Comes in a tube for grease guns, or just take off the cap and insert finger.

Where the heck do they require needle bearing grease in a water pump job? That's for like powerhead rebuilds. Whatever the case, heck we used vaseline for many years before OMC came out with their own stickem.

LoL FR... thanks! I am at work right now so I dont have the manual with me but I think the needle bearing grease comes in somewhere when pulling the lower unit off. I may be wrong. Sounds good though, ill pick that stuff up. I think we already have some vaseline around though o:)

Re: Water pump/ Impeller installation

Use a little dish soap on the impeller when you install it in the housing. Makes it alot easier and lubes it up for the first start-up. Just smear some around on the inside of the housing and install the impeller...And when you put a little grease on the drive shaft, don't put any on the top end, just the splines....
