Phil and jimlad,

I have been to Torquay and taken a boat cruise down the River Dart to Dartmouth. I fell in love with Dartmouth, but that's as close to Cornwall as I've been, similar?

Ya know what struck me about Torquay, and I have seen these things in Australia too, those little shacks that you guys rent and/or own for use on the beach?

We just take our chairs and maybe a large umbrella that we stick in the sand . . . it's way cheaper and they're really not that heavy.

Maybe we have them here, but in case I'm not the only one who hasn't seen them before, they're kinda like those funny ice house things some of you guys use for ice fishing, but they're meant for the beach . . .

Torquay is a lovely place does get busy in the holiday season we are in penzance where st micheals mount is out in the bay.Dartmouth is a beautiful part of the county too.
lol i think only the holiday makers use those shacks you are on about

not sure if this works but here is a link to a live web cam that looks out on our bay the only thing is its dark here now so you wont see much but during the daytime you can see the mount and most of the bay.

I have to agree with you on Dartmouth, a fantastic place. I guess myself and jimlad have been a little spoilt with regard to the South West of England, he lives in an area that is IMO just about perfect and I now live in Birmingham but I was born in Plymouth and spent 25yrs enjoying that part of the country.
The Devon and Cornwall area has so much to offer, from the totaly unspoilt wilds of the 3 moors (Bodmin, Dartmoor and Exmoor) down to one of the most fantastic coastlines anywhere in the world. If city life is your thing you can have that as well!!
As for the history of the area where do you start, some of the best pre historic sites in Europe can be found on Dartmoor and you can then follow a timeline right through to present day. Probably the parts of most intrest to this forum would be the maritime history, Sir Frances Drake, the Pilgrim Fathers etc. I used to often sit on the Mayflower steps to eat my lunch, I never gave it much thought that I was parking my butt on such a historical piece of granite.
I would strongly recomend to anyone reading this to find time in thier lives to visit.

I don't live there anymore so I've no problem with the place being overun with "Grockle's"8)8)

Don't know of anywhere in Queensland where those little huts exist, but I do believe there are a few in Vistoria, Aldos part of the country. Probably for the City Dudes (town mice).
Saw a program on Auctioning your Home, and up came one of these things. Couldn't believe they paid so much.
Up here it is just an umbrella. Where we live we go to Bribie Island, (30mins) and most times there are few people on the beaches, and it is just perfect....everyday.

[colour=blue]Yeah, we got those little beach boxes. They are a wooden structure very similar to a garden shed in size. No power or running water, just a place to change into your speedos.

As beachfront properties have become a premium investment, the little beach boxes have risen in value. 10 years ago, a beach box on a sandy and sheltered beach would sell for 30 or 40 grand. Now they are up to half a mil.

I forgot to mention the beach huts: A very English thing.

They first appeared in the early Victorian era when it became the "in thing" for the wealthy people from London to go to the south coast to "take the air" and bath, in order to protect thier modisty they had these huts built to change into thier swim suits in privite. The filthy rich even went as far as to have the huts mounted on wheels so that having changed thier attendants could push the hut into the water so they did not have to walk down the beach in public view.
These huts are now worth a fortune, you could by an average family home for the price paid for some of them

i totally agree that we are spoilt having living here but its also a shame that some people who do live here dont realise what an absolute gorgeous place it is.

Its the age old saying "Familiarity Breeds Contempt", I used to take things for granted when I lived in Plymouth, they were just there!

yeah i too took it for granted till i met my wife who comes from lancashire where there is no beach or sea for miles away and she only went to a beach when she went on holiday to rhyl to visit her grandmother
it is a beautiful place here.

Lancs is my old stompin' grounds. Our little factory is in Leyland and I spent two weeks a month there for almost 2 years. There is some beauty around there too. The Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, Snowdonia and the Peak District are all very close, and a run to Scotland is an easy day trip. Definitely has lack of sun issues though . . .

yeah the surf is weird here one day it can be flat calm the next it comes romping in, our railway track runs along side the beach and the surf will come right up and over it sometimes.
