Question about taking a lower unit apart

how do I get the carrier ass. out of the housing on a 150 hp lower unit? I Have gotten the retaining ring out but I'm stumped from there. I have a bent prop shaft and I need to take the unit apart to see what the gears look like so I wil know which direction to go in to get this fixed!! Thanks

I use a 2-jaw puller with long reach. Depending on the model, you can use your prop like a slide hammer. Just slide it on and put the nut on loosely, Then slide-hammer away. This is always true with the inline-6 150s. It doesn't work for all V-6 150s.

I have a 83' v150 v6 I'll try the prop slide hammer trick and let you know if it works!

You can also break the carriers loose by placing 2 piece of flat metal about 1/4 in thick betweem the prop and the lower unit put spacers on the shaft and use the prop nut to pull the carrier loose, it won't pull it clear out but will pop it loose

I got it out and will take it to the machine shop to see if they can straighten it! The gears look great !

We have straightened shafts localiy sence the 1960s with no problems justintime, how long have you been working in the marine service field?

i would not, heating up metal and putting back to were it was, i would not say good practice

with 2 years of metal technology and the newer alloys today, i would not do it

i know u can do it, but the liability, just think about it

I won't argue with you but if you had a clue you would know they cold straighten them. Again how many units have you repaired other than those at MMI?

we were always told if it is bent replace it

Well, I ended up having to bite the bullet($300) and get the new shaft. The local machine shop here couldn't get it perfectly straight and the prop splines had a slight twist also!! With the seal kit and water pump kit and bearings I dropped about $450 today. on top of that I'm looking for a new prop!! One thing is for sure, I WILL be more careful from now on!!
