This assault weapons ban is always an ignorant idea that is spawned from people watching too many episodes of "Miami Vice" on TVLand. Anyone with a clue knows that the most common guns used in crime are crappy small caliber semi-auto pistols or revolvers.

The weapons proposed in the ban are mostly owned by enthusiests, sport shooters, or collectors. Whatever, my shotgun will put guts on the back wall just fine (as long as no one takes issue with the telescoping stock), and I'll be keeping my high-cap mags for my Glock thank you very much....

Ya know what's weird? Our friends on the left are terrified of the power that the Bush Admin. supposedly craves. They rant on and on about the "gutting of the Constitution", "shredding of the Bill of Rights". They warn us that this is a fascist dictatorship in the making. Yet many of them want to limit or eliminate our right to bear arms . . . hmmmmmmmm

Circular logic there QC.

Just in case you don't get it you are trying to defend one assault on the constitution with another. And the real rub here is you think one is ok, but the other is the devil's incarnate. Double standards, ya gotta love'em

Re: The Liberals are Already trying take more of your Rights Away

I have three real good reasons not to own any guns, my children.

I was reading the latest edition of Readers Digest and in the article about a stalking victim she stated if she had had a gun in the moment written about she would have shot the shadowy figure in her bedroom. She is glad she did not have a gun, it was her 7-year-old son.

I do not have any guns, I do not want any guns, but I have said it before and will again, I will join in the fight against any attempt to prohibit my right to keep and arm bears. d:) Errrrr I mean keep and bear arms. I enjoy target practice, and at one time I was very good with my father's .22 rifle with peep sights. I was also very accurate with his and our neighbor’s front stuffers. Even though I was taught gun safety and respect and was generally a well-behaved kid, I still played around and ended up shooting the dog one day, thankfully with just a BB gun. I was stupid, the dog was with me because I was HIS boy. I ended up hurting him because I was playing around, and I knew better. This is why I am a strong supporter of certain gun control. Because we can't eliminate stupidity, we must work to control the opportunity for people to be stupid, like letting children get a hold of our guns.

When assault weapons are made and used for only one purpose, there is absolutely no excuse or reason for the average Joe Citizen to own one. You don't use it for obtaining food or reasonably for protection of your family or property. Therefore I would support a bill controlling the ownership of assault weapons, if it were practical. But as one of you stated (repeated) when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns. That is not a blanket permission to throw intelligence and reason out the window, just a reasonable argument against unrealistic and impractical gun bans. Let's all hope this ban fails. For one day, I may want/need to own a weapon for self-protection.

And let's hope the right-wing nut jobs eventually grow up and accept some responsibility and accept some reasonable gun regulation. Maybe when intelligence re-enters the populace we won't need big brother to "Protect me from myself, or else I'll sue you."

I own guns. Always have. Just have no need for Howitzers or fully-automatics. Then again, if some country were to invade Wisconsin, I wouldn't mind having a few handy. ;)

I agree with a lot of the above post.

You misunderstood my point, which I guess is my fault . . .

My points were:

a) That I still have no evidence from anyone of any Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms that the Bush administration has taken from any US citizen and

b) those who claim so are often in favor of gun control, which is a Constitutionally guaranteed freedom and most importantly,

c) that those who most recently have been fearful of a Government that is too powerful are, if also in favor of gun control, in favor of limiting the strength of US citizens. That to me is illogical. Circular or otherwise.

Actually I was suggesting that those who claim that Bush has "gutted" stuff are inconsistent if they also support gun control. And that it is illogical to control our freedom to own guns if they also fear a Government that is too powerful.

And, just for fun, I favor teaching kids how to shoot for the simple reason that I almost shot my foot off the first time I handled a gun and you did shoot your dog. The fact that I had no previous 'sperience makes my . . . er . . . experience defendable, while yours was not . . . :p

BTW, I never said I was in favor of citizens owning Bazookas, I was just pointing out an inconsistency in some citizens' opinions . . . ;)

Ya know Demsvmejm, You are very articulate and have done a real good job of giving the 'classic': we are all stupid, or victims, so let's raise everyone's taxes n' hire Judges, n' police n' build prisons to grow Mommy Government to protect all of us potential victims from the consequences of extra ordinary events. Two what I tend to label "straw man" argements: as I have never shot my dog, nor have I ever been tempted to shoot my kids out of panic, nor can I examine the evidence for a need you present. The story in Readers Digest is real "touchy feely", (ie: who wouldn't freak out about the possibility of shooting their own child), and your experience with your dog is also a good lesson for all of us to learn from. Newspapers and TV, in fact the whole MSM is generaly going to report bad news not good. If the news is real touching and pulls at the heart then the Liberals use it as a call to action to pass laws and grow the government. I prefer to think postive and emphasize the use of personal responsibility and education to teach people to respect firearms and if they are not suitable to have a firearm, (like the lady who almost shot her kid), they should voluntarily not have any guns, (without the need to restrict my rights). I am not saying this to make you mad at me or have you think I am real arrogant et al. What I'm saying is this: Our government is far too big due to well meaning Liberals n' Fuzzies. If you don't like or want guns don't have them. I want my rights as guaranteed under a 20 page document I hold dear. Please keep government as small as possible to focus on truly necessary government functions. Respectfully, (and I do mean it), JR

The right to bear arms has NOTHING to do with hunting or target practice. The right to bear arms is to protect us against our government. Trust me, we need bigger, stonger, and more accurate guns....

Oh, I love it so when a member distills issues down to their lowest common denominator. Here inlies (above) the total lack of logic and validity of the positions of the Left.

Why, do you ask, do so many critical thinking individuals fail to connect the dots? Is it because they have an ulterior motive? Even in Lenin's and Stalin's Russia, they were able to pull the wool over the eyes of many of the the Inteligencia, all using words and themes that sounded so kind and caring but totally ignoring the nature of mankind.

Is America's inteligencia really that dumb or blind? I fear so. Even in the microcosym of this little forum, we see ample evidence of it.

In addition to what POINTER said, the Constitutional rights are what make us uniquely American.

Those that fear for thier children's lives if you have a gun in your home have a legitamate concern.
However, I choose my right to bear arms over your right to have children. :^

Any Government that fears their armed citizens should be feared by those citizens.

Any armed public is a safe public.

Any Ruler will sit up straighter with a noose around his neck.

Those are all tried a true statements... anyone that doesn't get it, won't get it.

The New Assault Weapons Ban

Ayuh,....

The resurrection of the Law that did Nothing to Lower the Crime rate is Back........

Kinda like Midnight Basketball, isn't it? More Liberal symbolism over substance. The fact is that 'assault rifles' are no different than many conventional appearing semi automatic rifles. Why is it then that the Liberal Intelligencia persists in making such an issue out of them?

Could it be that they have an ulterior motive? Such as pecking away at the edges until they can fulfill their whole agenda of outlawing all firearms?

Their arguement that there is no rational use for 'assault rifles' and that they look mean and nasty fits in with their slogan that 'mean people' (things) suck.

And here's the Problem,.......

You've fallin for the Hype.........

By Definition,..... Assault Weapons are Already Illegal to Own,... without a Federal Permit.......

By Definition,..... Assault Weapons are either Fully Automatic, or selectively Fully Automatic......
In other words,... a Machinegun.....

And,..... Fully Automatic MachineGuns are,+ have been Illegal since about 1932.............

The Liberals are trying to pass this Useless law against guns that Look Like Assault Weapons.........
Which by Definition are Not........................

Re: The Liberals are Already trying take more of your Rights Away

If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000.

The rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.........................Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington

HMMMMMM........
Me thinks that the 160,000 were not shooting at the 2112.......
Somehow I think that I have see this fuzzy math scenario before.......;)
However, with your logic, we should redeploy the Washington faction to up the body count.......:)
