I have a Kiekhaefer Mercury 1250, I think a '69. This last summer I was running it and the forward went out as we were going across the lake. Got back to dock in reverse and took it to shop. Replaced the forward gear. Took it back to lake, backed away from dock fine. Went to use reverse later in day and wouldn't engage. It works out of water with earmuffs on, however not when prop is is in the water. Did the mechanic not put something together right or does the reverse gear need replacing?

Re: Mercury 1250

After going into the lower unit, and the next use is a failure I for one: would go right back to the shop that did the work. Let them explain why a new forward gear can't function at the same time, (out on the pond) as the 'old reverse' does! My $.02! JR BTW welcome to iboats!

Thats exactly right take it back, it might just need adjustment, if they installed a new fwd gear they probably put a clutch dog in also. It doesn't really matter rev. worked when you toke it to them and know it doesn't any repetable shop should stand behind their repair

Agreed. Take it back, start out nice...but get as firm as you need to get in order to get it fixed right this time.

Re: Mercury 1250

So you guys think that the dealer may have not put something back together right? He told me on the phone he would normally replace the other gears as well but due to the fact that the motor is older and he said they looked like they were in good shape, he recommended to leave them in.

Re: Mercury 1250

If he said they were good the first time, don't let him change his mind when you take it back. It sounds to me like improper linkage adjustment or something else small, somebody didn't quite finsh the job

Re: Mercury 1250

Thanks for your help so far. I just dug out the invoice for the previous repairs. He replaced the clutch. He did not replace the forward or reverse gears due to the cost/age of motor. He did write on the invoice "No guarantee how long this will last". So he kind of covered himself there. I'm going to call him tom. morning and see if he'll take a look at it. Hopefully it's like laddies said "someone didn't finish the job". It did work backing away from landing, but it was gone next time I attempted to use it.

Re: Mercury 1250

the shift shaft on those rotate to put the lower in gear. it's like a pie chart. a tiny sliver for reverse, and a sliver for neutral, and 350 degrees for forward. it sounds like the shift shaft is out of adjustment.

Re: Mercury 1250

Were it me... I'd skip the part about reverse working that one short time and complain from there. Reverse was fine when it went in - not when it came out - end of story.

*You know* reverse was never an issue until it went there for service. Could be as easy as a cable adjustment. I assume the forward and reverse gears were mostly OK or he would have told you so and aborted the job - at least I would have.

Did he replace the shift cam while he was in there? If he did not - he's incompetant, and clearly at fault.

It's a small, relatively cheap, part who's wear can have a direct impact on shiftability.

Clams,
He told me they were in "pretty good shape". That led me to believe that they would last a couple years, not 30 seconds.

Re: Mercury 1250

Ok..... Agreed. So don't mention the 30 seconds at all. All that is doing is giving him something to hang his hat on.

The shift cam (while a small part) is a critical one. A worn shift cam requires a lot more "throw" of the shaft to accomplish the same movement.
