While fishing yesterday I began hearing a knock while running. I throttled down as low as I could and still move as I was way too far away from the ramp. I turned it off and when I restarted it wasn't going into gear or maybe it just seemed that way because it wasn't moving forward anymore. I thought I may have sheared a pin but haven't checked yet. I did hit a stump fairly hard a few weeks before. The knocking is my biggest concern.
Any ideas??????

hopefully it was a pin. check it and let us know. stopping the engine may have let the rest of the pin fall out. after you restarted it did the knocking go away.

Now that you mention it, I don't remember whether it was or not. I'll check it as soon as it gets daylight around here. Thanks.

Re: 1967 Evinrude 9.5 trouble

Well, here's the bad news. The shear pin was fine, so I went a little deeper into the problem. I took out the drain plug in lower unit and found very little oil and was mixed with water. Went a little deeper, removed the whatchamacallit to look at the gears and found that to be a big problem. Small one on top is completely gone and one of the larger ones is in very bad shape.
Question: Where could I find replacement for these. I suppose I would need the whole gear set.???? Probably should get a lower unit seal kit as well. Give me some advise. Thanks.

Get the entire lower unit. They sell frequently on Ebay for around $100.

By the time you buy the seal kit and gears, you will be in deeper than that. Any geracase from 1964 to 1973 made for the 9.5 will fit.

More yards to check:

Copy the links to your browser without the quotation marks.

Edit: By the way, that shear pin should have broken and saved your gears. A lot of people put anything from brass dowels to cut off nails in there. It is very well worth it to find a dealer and keep a few spares - part # 307949.

From what you said about the water, I suspect the drive shaft bearings and forward gear thrust bearings are probably shot, which is the reason for the gear failure, not hitting the thing in the water. Drive shaft bearing is not replaceable, so you need the whole she-bang.
