Hey all,

My 1968 evinrude 18hp fastwin has been fantastic. I freshened up the carb, ignition, cooling system, and lower unit one year ago. I am getting water in the lower unit still. I didn't replace the spagetti seal in the l/u cap, and the prop seal was fine, I thought.

I am going to open the l/u again and reseal it with new parts this time. Here are my questions for those who wouldn't mind helping out:

1. ishop doesn't have the spaghetti seal, Laings has a "seal kit" but I can't figure what comes with it. Any suggestions on finding the parts?

2. Should I replace the propeller shaft seal in the top of the lower unit?

Thanks for the help!!

Hiya,

If you're going to replace some seals, why not do all of them? If you really want to know where the leak is, you can pressure test it... with lower unit off and the oil drained, find a way to put a few psi of air into it (don't use a compressor, a few psi is enough, definately do not go above 10 psi - you probably don't even need that)

Some people push a cut down automotive valve stem pressed into the fill/drain hole, and a few pumps of a bicycle pump, or you can you use the screw in part off one of the pumps you use to put the lower unit oil in.. rig that to a hose with a syringe or something. (i've used a rubber stopper with hole drilled through it, and a piece of tubing siliconed into it in a pinch).

lay the thing into a kiddie pool with water in it (or bath tub if your wife is not home), and see where the bubbles come from

Like i said, I'd change them all anyway... BTW, in your point #2, I think you might mean the seal around the driveshaft (not propeller shaft?)... my merc had a leaky seal under the water pump (that I diagnosed with a kiddie pool).

Sorry, I can't help you with parts, but an Evinrude/Johnson dealer would be my first guess.

Good luck.

iboats should have the complete seal kit. Their stuff is regular Sierra Marine. For best quality get a genuine OEM kit from a dealer. Replace all the seals, including the shift rod seal and it won't leak, providing the shafts aren't excessivly grooved. Make sure the spagetti seal is cut square at the ends, slightly overhanging just a bit, and use sealer in there.

That includes the gaskets for the drain/fill screws. Not sure if the kit includes those.
