Model # 60073D. Just acquired boat with this outboard attached and has been sitting for atleast three yrs. We told boat ran fine before it was parked. Does anyone know if the starter will not engage if LU is still in gear. Electric shift is not working, clicking, or doing anything as far as we can tell. Is there a way to return LU to neutral in order to see if the motor is even going to run.

It's not an electric shift. It's hydro-electrical and shifts on oil pressure. Do a search and look for Joe Reeves' posts. He has some great explanitions of the workings of this unit.

It will not shift out of forward without running.

Well the info I got from Mr Reeves posts was helpful or will be if I can get the motor started. Does anyone know if the starter will not engage if the hydro electric shift is still in gear. Because starter is not engaging. We do here clicking from one of the soleniods going to the starter when the key is turned.

Correct, it will not shift without running. Nor will it make any clunks, burps or anything else to say it's alive. But it should go into neutral as soon as you start cranking it over with the starter.

The starter not running could be a faulty safety switch on the throttle. Or the throttle is just advanced too far. It should not crank at higher than fast idle position. Or of course all the usual stuff like battery and connections.

Some newer remote controls had a only start in neutral feature built into the push button switch. You could have one of those controls. In that case, the neutral button has to be pushed before it will crank.

If you can hear the solinoid click, everything is stopping right there. Jump directly to the starter from the battery. If it won't tun over, the starter is the problem.

Solinoid was the problem. It will turn over however the carbs will need to be gone through and the in line fuel filter or the little fuel intake on the port side is shooting gas out the back through a small hole. Sooooo I still have a ways to go with this one.... water pump, etc..

eletronic box from motorola that controls the solenoids was bad and had been exposed to salt water. new one is over 400, guess this just became a parts motor.

The Motorola amplifier has nothing to do with either the shift solenoids or the starter solenoid. Salt water won't normally hurt it, other than eat the wires off of it.

Are you sure it is bad???? Exactly what is it (or not) doing?

it ate the wires off, it clean flush with the amp so there's no way to splice it back together.
