I recently purchased this beast for the amount of $600. (Its attached to a fiberglass boat.)When I bought it the seller assured me that with the fuel hose replaced and a new batt. it would run great. This is not the case.( I know there a sucker like me born every minute)..The starter turns the flywheel just fine..The cylenders are getting fuel. the magneto is not giving a spark. there is no alternator or generator on this model. and I called it a magneto because the cap is facing downward( I think this is correct) Any advise..diagrams. crude drawings would be helpfull. And thanks for all the info I've gathered from this furum before I posted this.

1. Turn flywheel till timing mark on magneto pulley lines up with safety switch button. At that point, the timing marks on the flywheel and recoil housing and cylinder block should also be aligned.

2. Remove the 3 screws holding the belt pulley cover and the cover. Disconnect the black wire from the side of the magneto, but leave the short wire connected. Release the spark plug wires from the grommets on the heads (the grommet brackets are split - just bend them open). Now remove the 3 big bolts holding the magneto bracket to the cylinder block and remove the whole unit from the motor. Now you can work on it without standing on your head.

Remove the distributor cap. Remove the nut and belt pulley. Now you can see everything and check for obvious problems.

Clean the breaker points shiny bright and set their gaps at .020" at their widest opening.

Slip the pulley on, hold a screwdriver against the side of the housing and 1/4" away from the button on the coil. Turn the pulley and there should be a strong spark from the button to the screwdriver. If not, go back and check your work. If you have spark at the button, reinstall the distributor cap and check for spark at all 4 wires. If you have spark at the button but not at the wires, look for a pinhole through the distributor rotor. That will be hard or impossible to see, but what sometimes happens is that it arcs through from the brass to the shaft.

If none of this works, get back to us for more complete and complex instructions.

You don't need to install magneto on engine to check for spark. Ground spark checker to magneto mounting bracket, and spin pulley by hand, it will easily jump 1/4" gap if everything is correct. While apart, remove coil, and see if there is a burn'rt hole on side of coil shorting to ground, this is on flat side of coil. They made thin, flat sheet, plastic insulator's for these coils' to solve this problem. It was common on these magneto's

ok the coil button is now giving me spark... the washers on bolt in side of housing were warn and grounding out..fixed that... now I have spark on plug wires 2&4.. 1&3 give a small barely noticeable spark not enough to make it through plug...can this be right?? Also I want to have my cylinders fireing in right order..what are thier numbers starting with staboard top, starboard bottom, port top, and port bottom? Thanks again for the info...

Double check the points. Test the plug wires for continuity. I think the firing order is 1-2-3-4 Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

so starboard top cylinder is #1, starboard bottom is # 2, port top # 3, port bottom # 4, is this correct?

Starboard 1, and 3. port 2, and 4.

Highlander, That motor has two sets of points. One set gives spark to cylinder 2 and , the other set fires cylinders 1 and 3. They share a common condenser. There are two sets of timing marks 90 degrees apart on the dist pulley base. The points should be clean and open just as the timing mark on the pulley matches the two timing marks on the pulley base. uSe a continuity meter to set these.
