Hi all, this is my first thread in this forum, but I am sure it won't be my last. I recently purchased a 79 Delta Mark III with a mercruiser 165, 6 cyl, I/O motor. I don't know anything about it, but I have purchased a manual. I went out to the lake for the first time this Saturday, and the lifts on the motor will not bring prop up high enough. It makes noise as if the electrical is working properly, but the drive only raises about 3-4 inches. Does anyone have any advice as to what may be the problem, and how hard is it to DIY?

low oil in the tank would be my first guess if it is moveing and stoping while the trim pump motor is still running

there should be something in the manual but if you look at the pump it should have a metal tank and there should be a dipstick /fill plug

Thanks, I'll check it out. While in tow, is there a special brace or something that i should have attached to the lower unit to keep it in the up position, and to keep the pressure off the hydraulics?

Re: Hydralic Lifts

no special braces.... hydraulic fluid is not compressible...so it makes a pretty solid brace inside the cylinders

Re: Hydralic Lifts

assumin ya got the three button trim control on the dash. for full up. are ya useing both the middle and the top button. ya need to use both for it to go all the way up. up/out only button, the middle one, it will only move a little bit cause that's what it's supposed to do. not allow it to operate past the gimble ring flanges. up + up/out button, both buttons operated together, middle and top button will bring the drive all the way up for trailering or shallow water operation. ......hydralic lifts are termed trim cylinders or trim rams....no dip stick on my 165. mine is a 75 though so i suppose yers could be different. to check fluid, trim all the way down and look in the fill hole. fluid should be up to the top of hole.....if yer useing the buttons correctly. problems could be, oil level low, or internal resistance in cylinders.........i don't use and braces either...just full up and drive away........

ps, don't know what manual ya got. but if it aint the mercruiser one, get one. it has much better info in it than the aftermarket books......the oem manual even has trouble shooting guides in it......:)

Re: Hydralic Lifts

On that old rig, you probably have the metal tanked pump,....
I think on the front right corner of pump, as you face it, about midway up, there's 2 screws, 1 about 1/4" higher than the 1 next to it,.....
Remove Both of them,+ Fill it thru the higher 1, til it comes out the lower 1....

ATF will work just Fine.....
