Water pump quote

I've got a 2003 johnson 150 (J150PLSTM). A guy quoted me a price of $225 to change the waterpump, this is including replacing the housing.

On my last motor (Suzuki 65) I changed the water pump myself for a price of about $35 - the cost of the kit. I know it's going to be higher because someone else is doing it, but does this sound like a fair price? Does the housing need to be changed as well?

This motor is ran in 95% saltwater and ran in the shallows of Texas bays, meaning it's pumped a lot of mud and sand through the cooling system. This is the first time the pump will have been changed in the two years I've owned it.

Thanks for any help.

If it's been two years, time to change it before it gives you trouble.

The kit goes for $70.00,so that leaves $155.00 for labor. Most shops quote 1 to 1 1/2 hours,so I think the price is in the ballpark. The shop has to make a living.

It is always is a lot cheaper to do it in your backyard yourself where there is no overhead. But if you actually charged yourself labor ? ? ?

Chang it weather you pay or do it yourself. DHP is right look at the cost of the part, shop will probably charge you a markup on the part over what you can get it for and then they will charge labor around here labor prices can be between $45-$70 hr i know one marina who is $55 which is what i would beleive to be a median price. The range for here (around lake thurmond SC) is a total guess sice i have only asked that one guy who i kind of work with, and i do all my own work, but from a guess based on automotive rates is what i would beleive boats mecanics to get. Like he also said they are in it to make a profit not just like a buddy you ask to help out in return for all the beer he can drink while doing it and then a fishing trip!

As long as you can get the bolts loose yourself there is little different in the engine and the Suziki you canged in the past. Consider doing it yourself if you don't like the labor cost. It does sound about right, and fair.

Saltwater rates are often double that of freshwater. Not so much the labor amount, but the labor time. They might be estimating an extra hour to deal with frequently difficult fasteners.

With a whole new OEM pump, that price would be very fair in our market.

Re: Water pump quote

I called a couple of places this morning to get some other quotes. .. kinda. One place told me they didn't do quotes, but said the kit ran $70 - $80 and their labor rate was $75 and hour. Said it was about a two hour job.

The other place said $70 for the kit and $65 an hour. About 1.5 hours of labor for them.

These are rates down on Texas Coast.

Thanks to those that replied.

We figure 1 to1 1/2 hours like I stated, but are quick to update the customer if the job starts going south.Last thing we want is a customer "surprised" by a bill way over what we quoted. We stop working on it unil he comes in or understands why the price is going up.

Something else we've been doing for the past couple years ..... if we feel a customer can do a job himself (or at least a major part of it),we sell him the parts, and try to walk him thru doing it himself. We want customers to pay us what they can't (or don't want to do).If they do what they can, boating is more affordable for them. That equals more enjoyment, more boating.

As we started doing this I had reservations, but parts sales have risen, and we keep busy in the work bays as well. This won't work for a big shop, maybe, but we are a small step above a Mom and Pop store, and it is working for us.

Sorry to be so wordy, just having fun.Last week before we gear up for the season, jacuzzi is calling. And I didn't know they could even talk.
