Early 70's 40hp Evinrude carb problem?

I have recently purchased a 1973, MFG, 14.6' with what I think is a 73 Evinrude 40hp engine on it. I have looked at the MFG web page and I'm most certain that the engine is original one sold with the boat. I’m still trying to figure out what it really is.
My real problem is that when it hits the water and runs for, from a few seconds to sometimes up to 10 minutes then it dumps a large amount fuel through a hole at the 2:00 position aft edge right down the intake and floods the engine. When this happens I have to remove the fuel line from the tank and turn it over until it starts again and reconnect the fuel. Sometimes this happens several times before it will run without giving me grief for a little bit. I have removed and cleaned the carburetor and that didn’t help. It’s like the carb is over filling. The float, I think, is working right, it looks good and moves very well. :|

I think your float is sticking, Grady.

Put a rebuild kit in it and set the float by the book.

Good luck, and let us know the result.

I appreciate your input and have to agree too. I have been trying to order a kit for it and am having trouble figuring out if I'm ordering the correct one. I found the following numbers on the engine: M/N 40355D, S/N J01575 and 4-5000 RPM. I'm not even certain if it is a 73 or not.

Model 40355D is, in fact, a 1973 40hp.

I am having exactly the same problem with my 71 40hp. Did a rebuild kit fix your problem?

That thread was posted in March 2007. I doubt he is still checking back.

But a kit should have fixed his float valve problem, which is what he had.
