Unkown leak on outdrive

I just bought my first boat a few days ago and I dont really know a whole lot about them. I noticed a small leak coming from the forward part of the outdrive, but its not the gear oil. I drained it thinking that was what it was, but the consistancy is totally different. The leak seems to be more like a hydrolic fluid, yet the user manual mentions nothing about a hydrolic fluid or anything close to it in that location. Its an 89 Four Winns 160 Freedom with the 3.0L motor. Any help would be great.

Re: Unkown leak on outdrive

most likely its one of the lines for the power trim.
get someone to run the drive up and down while you look very close at the lines going into the gimbal housing. Also the rams can leak around the cylinders on the outdrive.
Now that you have a OMC get a real factory service manual. You will need it. Don't waste your money on a Seloc or Clymers manual.
Look on ebay you will find one. Here is a link

Just assuming that it may be the rams, is it something that I would need to do before I put it in the water again? And to fix an issue like that how difficult would it be?

Ayuh,..... It Needs to be Repaired,....
Otherwise,.... You'll be adding Water to Whatever is Leaking........
If Oil is leaking Out, water Will get In.....

And,......
Until you Know What's Wrong,........ A Repair Estimate is Impossible..........

Re: Unkown leak on outdrive

Found problem last night. It was a seal on the lower gear casing that was bad. The fluid leaking out was apperantly the old gear oil that had seperated from sitting. Replaced the seal and filled back up with no problems. Thanks for the help guys.

If it was indeed the gearcase leaking you better have a pressure test done on it.Usually when one seal is bad there are more to follow...

people who think like that really make me angry. please don't leak your oil into the water, i belive you can get fined for that. If you every move to florida please sell your boat first and never buy one again

BTW i'm not lib at all but, i do think responsible boating is a major issue. the 2cycles are on there way out don't give them a reason to go after the 4cycles.

You know the reason that people like me get into things like this are so that we can learn and understand more than we did we first signed up. We dont get on here so some A hole can pull his head out of his butt long enough to make a rude comment before he inserts it right back up there. I stated in the very first comment that I dont really know what I am doing, thats why I am here. If being a crude bastard makes you feel better about yourself than have at it, but you should have a little patience and understanding for those who dont know.

Re: Unkown leak on outdrive

well i'm sorry i could have said that nicer. around here the air boaters pissed off the one wrong guy who happend to be a state senitor and now hes working to have that kind of boating banned in this area. you really have to be careful about what you do on the water. just a few people can mess things up for every1. if they where to ban airboating whos to say outboard or inboards could not be attacked. some lakes and rivers around here is used go on with my grandfather as a kid are now no boating zones, and lots of areas have become min wake areas due to mannitie nuts. sorry for coming off as rude welcome to Iboats.
