:%Droped an E-Bay motor in my buddys 98 Wellcraft. Motor is a Volvo 3.0GL with the SX drive. Ran on the muffs for @ 15min. Sounded great. Yesterday we checked the oil and it was a mess. Today I pulled the plugs and all were dry. Cranked the motor and no water sprayed out. Did a compression test and the numbers were 95 psi on #1 and 155-160 on the back 3. With that kind of split and the large amount of water in the oil in a short time does it most likely have a cracked block or would a blown head gasket do the same thing? :%

A Headgasket is a Slim Possibility,..........

I'd Drain the cooling System,+ Pressurize it with Air to Find the Leak..........

Unfortunately,....... It Sounds like your Bud got Screwed.....

Re: Cracked block?

[Am hoping to get more input on this. The guy who sold the motor says he will send a head gasket and riser gasket and $100.00 bucks for time. With the info posted on compression numbers what are some thoughts. Thanx.

Re: Cracked block?

Your bud got screwed once when he bought the thing.

It's about to happen the second time if you guys accept an offer like that.
It's amazing to me the amount of pure marine JUNK that is bought and sold on ebay because the seller said it was good. Think about it. The owner has some junk to sell, call it good in the add, accept a price, ship it and make silly offers to the unknowing. Yep, that's ebay.

Re: Cracked block?

I sold a damaged lower (cone drug on concrete - made a hole) unit on ebay last year, However in the ad I stated thtree times that it was damaged and included pictures.

It sold to a dealer who wanted the low hour internals. It was cheaper than buying new, but I was very surprised at the closing price of $260

I have also sold thing for more than I paid for them

Yep, that's ebay.

Ayuh,.........

I've been Screwed a couple of times on ebay,.......

But,...... I've Stolen Way More Good Parts.................
Especially if it was listed in the Wrong catagory........

I think That's Why using the Seach engine, instead of just Surfing the listings works Soo Well.........

Btw,....... Your Bud really Should do that Pressure Test of the Cooling System,....
Not Only to Find the Problem,....
But to give him some Ammunition for Arbitration.......

Right with you on that one Bond-o. I currently run 43 Searches looking for a large variety of stuff. I have done quite well on E-Bay. I do my Homework before I start pulling out my wallet.

bingo- also searching for "local pickup only" with a small search distance is great....amazing to find marine stuff in one's own backyard. If people wont ship it goes cheap, cheap, cheap!!!!!!

I just bought a really nice Volvo Aq130C B20 engine for $50. local pickup only....so I was the only bidder. compression tested it today - 140 across the board!

I bought a cracked engine on eBay last year, I made a little digital video of the water draining out of the pan and the block failing the pressure test and emailed back and forth with the seller in a non-confrontational way... He refunded my money and apologized. The engine was represented as a good runner. If the ad had said as-is or something along those lines, I would have just eaten the loss.

Ebay is not all scammers, sometimes folks just think their stuff is better than it is...

Re: Cracked block?

I am sold that the block is cracked. This motor came from a boat place in New York. The guy says that it ran good and had good numbers. I believe that it wasn't drained before shipment and it was plenty cold up there and here in VA when it was shipped and during the time it sat in the back of a pick-up before we installed it. How do you do a pressure test on a raw water motor? I have a compessor, I just need some guidance. In closing, I just woke my boat (2002 Glastron Volvo 5.0GL SX drive)up from slumbers this weekend and it's good to go as always. Just a bit of smoke from the fogging oil. Thanx.

Hey senior B,

You may want to drain everything, it is supposed to get pretty cold here again by the end of the week.

Re: Cracked block?

If I think it's going to be near freezing (@ 35) till I take it out again then I drain the thing. I have'nt had any issues but I'm getting lots of practice in dealing with poor preperation and lack of maintenance issues.:^

Motor was siezed. Said he was getting water in the oil so he changed his manifold and riser gaskets, and changed the oil. Took the boat out Striper fishing and came back to find water in the oil. Put the deck lid down and walked away from it. I moved into the hood and he sees me taking my fine craft out every weekend so he asked if I could help him get his boat going after it has sat for 7 months. Thing was locked up tight. Nothing left to do after that much time other than tell him to ditch that motor and get another. His big problem is he is VERY cheap. Bailing wire and chewing gum can only do so much. Pretty sad as the boat it-self is in great shape. The SX drive looks almost new.

Re: Cracked block?

If it is still warm during the day then an overnight dip below freezing for a few hours is not really a big deal. But I don't worry about it at all because I keep it drained until the temps are stable. Like you said above it only takes a few minutes to do and it is well worth the peace of mind.
