77 Evinrude coil

Have a 77 Evinrude 115. Half the time i put it in the water it runs fine the other half there is not enough power to plane out, barely over wake speed. Was told maybe coil ignitor I tested all of them for spark and getting it. Is there another way to determine or is it that part of the engine.

Sometimes the ignition coils can work when cold and not function when hot. Usually the type of coil that is on your motor will be cracked or partly melted, or just look different than the others. Sometimes you can see the arcing if you run the motor at night. If you suspect a coil, it is safer to replace it because a bad coil can damage the powerpack.

My instinct is to look at the fuel system first. If the floats are sticking they could cause a problem like yours for instance. Same with obstruction in the carburetor body. Get rid of old fuel unless you are sure of it.

Might check the boots and connectors where the powerpack connects to the coil. Mine acted just like that.
