Hi Iboat readers.
I have been looking for a boat over the last two-three weeks and stumbled upon a 2000 fourwinns 454 i/o dual stainless props with a total of 90 hours on entire boat. Brand new dual axle galv. trailer.
The only thing wrong is a bent rod in the motor. The motor is already disassembled.
I have no issues rebuilding the motor. If the bore was ok i would just buy the crank/rod/piston kit and overhaul the bottom end. I wouldn't waste money on getting all the rods and crank 8). Hell I have a 10/10 steel crank and h-beam rods sitting in the garage i could use.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
be safe
I believe I can get this boat for 10,500.
Worth it?

well the problem is when they dont run it can hard to say what else is wrong

And who knows what littel parts are missing because its apart (which cost and arm and a leg )

You dont even want to think about how much money the parts in that outdrive cost :) Or what other dammage that water did

So if you dont have anybody to assess the condition of the other parts it is a crap shoot

With stuff like this all over the place that runs why ?

Very good points.
This whole "boating" thing is starting to become a little daunting.
I have never had such a long list of things to consider before purchase.
Thanks for your help.

P.S.
He states that the boat was stored on the ocean and one day he went to start it and it ran rough. Claims only part missing is the starter and that the outdrive was in near new condition with new 1200.00 SS props.

P.S.S
That boat above may break the budget...haha8)

Boating is a great thing but your jumping into the deep end of the pool :)

"you can own the boat Or the boat can own you"

There are plenty of smaller boats in great condition that would be a much better place to start and learn whats involved and work your way up to bigger boats over time

I have worked my way down to a smaller boat not because of money but because i am happy with the amount of time and work it takes to keep it in good shape

The problem is that new boat people think its like a CAR with all kinds of easy to swap parts

The motor/drive is pretty much carefully built to work as a unit and swaping things around is a nightmare even simple things like the exaust require orginal parts

RCSC,

I almost bought that boat on Wednesday. The guy that you're talkin' to (3rd owner) beat me to the second owner by 1/2 hour. Craig's List right? Shows for $11,900. Too much of a coincidence. He bought it for $8500, which I was prepared to shell out, like I said I was there on Wednesday literally 30 minutes after the other guy got there. The story I got was water in one hole from the through transom exhaust . . . One bent rod and it ran OK but a little rough. No other damage. The guy I talked to (2nd owner) is an engine builder and he is the one who tore it down. It sat in his shop for 2 years. There's also some interior damage as it sat in the sun. I may still go after it, but it could be a big nightmare . . .

Just for curiosity , how can a motor rod bend after 90hrs?

When water enters the cylinder it will create extreme pressures (compression) and bend or break the piston, rod and possibly crankshaft. It is usually referred to as hydrolocking as it will usually wedge/bend the rod and piston in the bore causing the engine to seize.

Basically you can compress a gas but not a liquid. It has nothing to do with hours . . .
