Hi I just took this boat out for the first time and it seemed to smoke a little more than all the other boats on the water. Is there any reason for this? It is a 1968 Chrysler boat I'm pretty sure it's the original motor but not positive. They said it was rebuilt. Can this be a mixture of gas and oil problem? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Is the motor a 1968 motor?
What ratio of fuel to TCW-3 oil are you using?
What are the spark plugs?
Have you replaced the thermostat?

If you don't know the age of the motor, look on the side of the port transom bracket for a 1" X 3" plate with model and serial numbers. If there is none, look around the top of the engine block for a silver colored quarter-sized disk which should also have the numbers.

Is this dejavu? Johnson made 35hp's from 1957-1959 and then discontinued them in favor of the 40hp. They again began making 35's in 1976. The motors from the 1950's used a gas-to-oil ratio of 24:1 while the later models used 50:1, and yes, the earlier models smoke more. If you find the model as ezeke suggests, we can help you with the oil mix. And depending on the year and model it may or may not have a thermostat. Also, if it's a 50's model, the metal tag will be in front under the steering bracket.

Duplicate post. That is a no-no.
