Motor popping up in reverse

Allright folks, I need some help. I have a 96' 150hp Johnson Ocean Runner. When I put it in reverse, and backdown, the engine pops up like its being trimmed up. What is the mechanism for the trim lock or is it just relying on the trim cylinder to keep the motor stable? Does this mean that the trim cylinder needs to be rebuilt? Any help for a newb is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

if it has power tilt and trim..something is wrong. even a motor with out is suppose to lock down when in reverse. can you raise the motor by hand when on the trailer?

Yes, it has PTT. It trims up and down fine. It just won't stay locked down in reverse. And, yes, I can lift it up when it is on the trailer. Any ideas how the lock down mechanism is supposed to work?

here's a picture of my 1988 90 tnt. the only thing i can see that would cause that is, if the connecting pin at the top has come out or rusted off. i couldn't believe how rusted mine was. other than that i guess some 'O' rings could be bad. the center plunger is the tilt hydrolics, the lower pins are the trim hydrolics.

When I grab the engine and lift it up while it is on the trailer, i can see the center cylinder slide up, out of the ram. I guess this would mean that some seals are gone??

i don't understand what you're saying. the hole thing moves, or the push rod moves in the piston housing. compare it to the other engine.

I can lift the motor up and the push rod moves in the piston housing. So i guess this may mean that a seal or check valve is blown in the cylinder. However, the engine will stay trimmed up fine. The other engine does not do this.
