The tires I have now have a 50K mile warantee. They only have 30K on them.
The shop said they would pro-rate them.

What tire would you recommend for a '01 Ranger King Cab 4x4?
I don't do any off-roading except for hunting season. I also tow the boat to the coast and lake.

I want a tough tire that lasts, and one that doesn't ride like a 3-legged elephant.

Ideas?

Thanks,

H.

BFG All Terrain TA. I have them, my brother has them, buddy with the Ranger has them. No complaints at all. They are quiet, they wear evenly, not bad off road, look good.....just a real good tire. I am happier with these tires than any others I've purchased (with one exception, and that tire is no longer available  ) I got mine from Sears with all the warrantees and lifetime rotate and balance (a must if you get them over-sized) and I love the service at Sears also (these are the first tires I have bought from them).

I will 2nd SoulWinner. I have BFG on all four and love them also if your not doing any major hauling go with the passenger grade tire. That is what I have on my S-10 4k# tow rating I've hauled mulch and tow a 2k boat and a 2500# camper with no problem. The only difference from what I was told by people in the industry is that the Light Truck tires have a heavier side wall. For those that use the truck as a work truck or for off roading. The passenger rated tires will cost less and will give you better milage. Just my $.02

Edit: You can get the BFG long trail ta's in passenger and LT I have both types on my truck and I need to replace the truck tires but the pass tires are only half worn.

I'll third it. BFG's are the best LT tire.

However Homerr since your in Oregon. Les Schwab's carrys Wild Country's that are a very close second at 2/3's the price.
Long wear, smooth, quiet and round. I've had them in 4 and 6 ply. No troubles whatsoever.

The worst tire I've had, car or truck, is Goodyear. This includes high line tires on customer's cars. They're what I call square (not round)tires and are very rough and noisy.

BFG is a good all terrain tire and used to sell them very few complaints over a 5 year period and you can get them in 6 ply to (i.e. load range c)
235 up to what ever you want

Re: Ok, time for new truck tires...Suggestions?

Thanks Guys...
I'll go take a look at the BFG.

The tires I have now are from Les Schwab. I don't know if they carry the BFG tires. I really don't want to buy tires from Schwab again, but if they are going to pro-rate, I might have to.

Any ideas how much I would get pro-rated from 20K miles or so?
Would it be worth my while to even bother going back?

Like I say..I'm not impressed at all with these tires. They wore out very quickly, not to mention the Wife's Schwab tires also wore out early on here minivan. Schwab replaced them, but not without an argument.

Thanks,

H.

Go for the B.F.G., I run 8ply (load range D) on my 4x4, now have 35k on them plenty of life left. I have used them in the roughest parts of Australia from the deserts (sand and stony) of central Australia to the rainforests on Cape York, yet to have a problem.

Bob

I will agree with the BFG's, but I am surprised at the Firestone Firehawks that came on my Yukon Denali. These tires give me decent traction, are quiet, and with 30K on them, hardly look used at all. If the wear continues like this, I should get 70K-80K out of them?!?! None of my smaller 4WD's got tire life like this!

I had a problem with one of the tires on my truck at about 15 or 20K miles. Sears checked the tread depth and replace the tire for free :) Needless to say, I am real happy with both the tire and the folks at Sears.

They said the tire had seperated. It developed a bump that was only noticable if I was going 1mph.

Tires are like a bar of soap, they wear slowly for a while and then all of a sudden they're all but gone.

I have had nothing but good luck with BFG's, both off road and on.

Michelin LTX M/S. I got 85K miles out a my last set and I'm pretty rough on tires. I had goodyears before that and didn't even get 30k out of them. I've heard of people getting 100-120K miles on those Michelin.

Heads up boys...

The local tire shop just said that BFG was purchased by Uniroyal (I think)
I don't know what this will do to quality. They claim that they are not as good as they use to be.

I forgot that a high school friend STILL works at this tire shop (only job he's had I think...lol).
He's willing to cut me a pretty good deal on a set of Dayton A/T tires.

Anyone ran these?

H.

That's pretty old news. I think that BFG was bought out by Uniroyal in 1990, which in turn was bought out by Michelin later on.

I've been using the BFG all terrain TA's for many years, and there has been no quality degradation. My dad used to get 75k miles outta them on a Toyota Landcruiser Wagon, towing a '49 airstream at least 1600 miles per year. He rebuilt more motors for that truck that replaces tires ;-)

I bought Yokohama Geolanders as they are in between the BFG AT's and MT's for tread pattern and suited me better. They are also quieter than BFG's. I don't have a lot of mileage on them yet so not sure how well they will last.

I had TA 's on Big Green, the E 150 138 WB van, they had phenominal dry traction, but lousy when wet (they were NOT all terrain however)

The best tire I could find was a Continental ConTrac, spensive, but wore like iron and had tremendous snow and mud traction

The Bummer ... they were 120 bucks each almost 20 years ago

but Ive seen them on Navigators, so they are still around, and if FoMoCo is using them on the Flagship, they gotta be good

buy good, get good

nuff said!

:D
