I recently aquired a 6hp evinrude. I have found what I believe is the model# E6RESR I think it is from around the 1990's, I am trying to get a repair manual so I can get it tuned up but cannot figure out which online seloc manual i need.

If anyone could help me out with some other question it would be great, being that this is my first boat.

Is this motor a 2 or 4 stroke? And what do I need to do for a basic tune-up?

Any other tips on operating or maintaining it would be great too

One more thing I forgot. Do I need to have the lower portion of the motor submerged in water when I run it at home?

Thanks for all the help so far. I have ordered the service manual and later today I will be ordering some kits to tune it up.

This is my first boat and I was wondering if anyone could give me a quick run through on the proper way to start the motor?

The motor should be in water to several inches above the anti-ventilation plate [AV for short], which is the large horizontal plate above the propeller.
The vent on your fuel tank must be open.
You should have a 50:1 mix in your fuel tank.
The fuel tank should be elevated rather than sitting on the ground.
The primer bulb should be squeezed until firm.
The choke should be activated.
The drive must be in neutral.
Operate the starter.
When the engine starts, ease the choke off.

Regarding having the fuel tank vent open, I have a portable plastic gas tank that sits in the back on the boat. Does this have the vent on it that needs to be opened?

Maybe, maybe not. The idea is that the tank must be vented to allow air to get in to replace the gas that is drawn out. Some tanks have a vent screw in the gas cap, some are automatically vented, some whatever. At any rate, it will run awhile till you start to form a vacuum in the tank, even with the vent closed. It may even suck the sides in on a plastic tank.

clik MARINE STORE at the top of the page. then search Evinrude parts. should have everything, here. we like to try to support the company that supports this free forum. and there parts prices are usually competitive. shipping is fabulous.

The choke should be activated.
The drive must be in neutral.
Operate the starter.

And the throttle must be within the range marked for starting. iIam not absolutely sure about this year model but on earlier ones the starter is blocked if the throttle is to wide open.

Re: 6hp evinrude, I am lost

Thanks to the help from all here, I have parts and manuals on the way to get my motor running. One thing I cant find is the proper spark plug, I have been all over the web trying to find it but no luck, once again this is for a E6RESR.

One other question, I dont think this motor has been used for atleast 2 years, should I do all the rebuild work(carb, fuel, water pump) before I even think about trying to start it, or should I give it a go and see how it runs before service it.

BRP engine diagram shows 5 different champion plugs, that can be used. the most common is the OL77JC4, go to the crank case view.

Adding one suggestion...... Notice the retaining bolts that attach the lower unit to the long exhaust housing. The water pump sits directly on top of the lower unit at that location. When running in a barrel or whatever, it's best to have the water level higher than the water pump by a couple inches or so.
