I have recently bought a 1971 18' Starcraft Starchief to finish restoring. New to the boat scene. It has a Johnson 100hp hydro-electric motor.

My question is on the casing of the throttle assembly there are the wires coming off the back wich i have all hooked up and are working but there are 2 wires coming out the side. One is white which has power when the key is turned on. (assuming for the keyed power for lights and what not).

The other wire is Red-blackstripe and does not seem to be a ground or have power with key in any position. Would like to know what thats for before i hook the white one up to a fuse box in case im on the wrong track.

There is also a toggle switch that looks like what you would raise and lower an outdrive with but the toggle only goes up and the drive does not have a system to raise and lower. ??

Thanks for any help in advance. Cant wait to get this thing in the water

I'd strongly suggest that you dismantle that control box to see exactly where those two wires lead as I suspect that they're spliced into different colored wires. Let us know what you find.

Ok i opened it up and the white wire is hooked to the ignition switch on the acc. The other one has a U crimp on it and is not hooked up to anything. Solid wires to where they both are so not sure what color they should be.

Are you sure that toggle switch isn't for your electric choke? That's what it is on my '73.

Well i just figured out mine is a 100esl 72R not sure if it would have an electric choke or not but ill check on that. But it does have a manual choke lever on the throttle casing as well. Would it have both. Guess ill just go look. Thanks for the response.

Now for those wires?

The toggle switch is for an electric choke.

The white wire would be a 12v source for anything one would want 12v applied to when the key is in the ON or START position.

The Red/Black wire if it isn't attached to anything would be nothing. You say it has a "U" crimp which I assume means it's folded back over itself and is simply a piece of wire as one would think of a piece of wire laying on a work bench going nowhere. If so, I'd discard it as it's just a wire that someone installed at one time for something which is no longer in use.
