It really does work. I've seen one in person at a demonstration (also with a hotdog). There is a catch - when it stops it blows a part that costs a couple hundred dollars to replace. However, it is still much cheaper than the ER...

It doesn't really work like that. I don't remember exactly, but I think the blade can sense conductivity (in microseconds). Hotdogs conduct about the same as people (similar salt concentration). When the blade senses condictivity, an electrical component blows and shuts the power to the unit, all in microseconds.

The wood shop table saw in my high school had one of those...it was installed after I watched the teacher remove two of his fingers. What a mess.

I have one finger that is missing part of the end, but the table saw shot out a knot in the wood that took it off.

It?s a GOOD and BAD invention and has been changed from the original to drop as well as stop the blade to make it fast enough

It has false trips in wet wood NOT good at all on a 100 dollar blade PLUS a new firing mechanism

IT has not been well received SO now the inventor is trying to get safety laws changed to require it on ALL saws with him as the sole supply

I will just save money and exhibit shop safety. You keep a good watch on where your fingers, heck your whole body, and you shouldn't have a problem. There are so many things that are not foolproof around a shop or boats, that a table saw is the least of my worries. Proper setup and hand control will stop all injuries from happening.

Until you sneeze...or hit a knot...or somebody taps you on the shoulder...and the next thing you know there's blood on the ceiling.

I have had a table saw for years, but, by far, the most dangerous tool in my shop is my claw hammer.

Well, you keep your hands far enough from the blade that a small jump will not push them in. If you have to get close enough for a small jump to tangle your finger in the blade, you should use a push block.

Man, to listen to you guys you'd think the shop is a dangerous place. I have a beer fridge next to my radial arm and table saw and I've never had a problem. Course I count in base 8 these days, but thumbs are highly over-rated anyway. :D

My shop teacher was a safety nut too. Now his disfigured hand scares little girls. ;)

Well ya, thats what dad has to do to let me use it when I was 12. I try to keep to those same principles, but am straying some occasionally.:D The only thing he is a real safety nut about is the delta shaper when it has the 7 inch panel raising cutter. The cutter alone weighs close to 5#. Other than that, it is just keep your fingers out of the blade, and don't be stupid.

When I was 12 I built my own table saw out of a weedwacker motor in my bedroom. :D My friend bet me I wouldn't make it to 20 with all my fingers, but he lost. Now it's 30 and I'm kind of on his side...

Those are the kind of stories dad would tell me about his childhood. For some odd reason, he wont let me do that. Although, everyone thinks I am weird for some of the ideas I create, but I think it is just "southern ingenuity."

Just wait till he lets me use the tools without him present.:D Who knows what will be in the driveway when he gets home.
