2.3 OMC fuel issue???

Hi -

87 Bayliner 2.3L OMC

I'm getting ready to pull the boat out of storage and give a permanent fix to my "temporary" fix to a fuel issue I was having last year.

Recap - The motor would run fine until it warmed up. After warm, it would bog down, sputter, and then die. To restart, I would need to peg the throttle. It would fire and then slowly (2 min) rev up to cruising speed. During this time, it was spewing a blackish smoke that reaked of unburnt fuel. To fix this, I took a piece of tie wire and wired the choke full open = no further issues.

I'm assuming my choke is bad, but thought I would double check here before throwing parts at it.

Is that a hot air or electric choke? Best bet would to do a complete carb rebuild. Most kits come with the choke parts.

Its an electric choke.

It's old enough where I should do a full rebuild on the carb, but I may be looking to take on a new boating "project" and sell the Bayliner, so I wasn't looking to put a lot of time into it. I guess a carb rebuild isn't that big of deal - I may end up tearing it down.

If it has a wire attached to the choke module, you need some alternator work. Electricity produced by the alternator heats the coil inside and that pulls the choke off. If the alternator isn't making electricity, the choke will stay closed. Most alternator failures are caused by loose, corroded, or crossed battery connections. Did you accidentally hook up the battery backwards when you reconnected it? It would only take a split-second to fry the diodes.

I don't believe I've ever crossed the battery connections.

Is there a way I can apply 12v to the lead wire on the choke module and see if it operates?

Take a volt tester to the choke wire and see what you have when the key is turned on..

The boat is finally out of storage so I could do some poking around.

With the key in the "on" position, I only get about 0.8 volts at the choke wire. Does the engine need to be running to get a proper reading? I didn't want to throw the muffs on yet and start it because it still gets close to freezing some nights and I don't want to drain everything again.
