Poor Performance and smoke

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2004 Bayliner 185 that has a Mercruiser engine, 130 HP. I just bought the boat and the first time I took it out everything was fine.

Now I get some blackish/white smoke for the first couple minutes after starting. It also runs very rough and the throttle response is not good. When I have the throttle open, it starts to bog down then speed up again.

I'm thinking its a carburator issue and I really don't want to bring it to a mechanic and spend the money because if it is in fact a carb issue my Warranty does not cover it.

Can anyone suggest something I can try doing on my own before I have to bring it to a mechanic?

Is the choke plate remaining closed after the engine is up to temperature? Take a look down the carb throat once it gets up to operating temp. The choke plate should gradually open as it warms up.

I will check when I take it out after work today. If it does not gradually open is there an easy fox for that?

Besides choke, spark arrester is not clogged?

Floats sticking? Smell of heavy fuel?

Check spark plugs for foul?

Check the wiring for the electric choke. The black wire and the purple wire. Black is ground and purple is power to the choke.

I think you hit it on the money here man. I am very new to boating/motors, etc...and I was looking at some wires that were disconnected yesterday yet had no idea where they went.
