I am having a very strange issue with my Johnson Outboard -- It does not happen every time just occasionally. There seems to be no exact trigger to make the problem re-occur. Initially I was having problems with the Tilt and Ignition on the motor. If you got it to fail, the tilt would not work and the starter would not turn over -- you can hear both trying to work it just seems as thought they do not have enough power to function. If I disconnect the power from the battery and reconnect it a few seconds later the motor starts right up and the trim works fine. I replaced the starter battery and know that it is fully charged so this is not my problem. Then, I was out on Friday running around 4700 RPM cruising and the Water Temp alarm sounded and the motor stalled like it was missing really bad. I shut it down, started the engine again to check the water coming out which was cool. Once I turned the key off a few seconds and started the engine again the alarm was off and the motor ran great as long as I kept it around 4000 RPM. If I ran more than 5 minutes above that level it seemed to foul out again. These issues really messed up what would have been a nice fishing trip.

I need some help isolating the problem -- I believe it is electrical and may be related to a relay in the motor. When I got home I disconnected all the other devices on my boat besides the motor and can still get the issue to occur. I pulled the 2 trim relay switches and this stops the trim from operating but has no effect on the starter. I disconnected another device which stopped the started but had no impact on the trim. Has anyone experienced something of this nature or can someone give me a few places to start looking. I really think all the issues are effected by the same component -- none seem to occur unless the other is happening.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Problem #1, I'd say you have a bad battery cable connection somewhere or a bad battery cable itself.
Problem #2 will go away with a new water pump and vernatherms.

It sounds to me that you have a grounding problem, like a bad connection.

I guess you have already cleaned all cables and replaced any that are damaged.

I agree with Walker and Windykid. Feel the battery cable terminals next time it happens. If they are hot, you probably have heavy corrosion on the cables where you cannot see it. The battery cable connections at the engine end needs periodic cleaning - especially the negative.
