This might be a stupid question but what is a ststor. I have a 115 horse inline 6 merc 1987. it will run good when i first get to the lake but after a few minutes it looses power. wot is a t 5200 rpm and it drops as low as 4000 rpm with my foot to the floor.. its not a fuel pump problem i tried pumping the bulb and it bogs down . any help would be great.

Re: merc 115 inline 6 problem

If ya have spark to all cylinders, and it charges the batt... the stator will have zero to do with poor running

bogging when pumping the bulb, tells the the floats are not closing when full. by pumping you are forcing fuel into the carb, if the bowl is full it will not allow fuel to enter. thus i think the float is sticking and the fuel pump is forcing more fuel thru, flooding the engine. it sounds logical to me anyway.

I have seen a coil going bad and make one run like that. ohm it and check it for cracks bad wires etc. Tim

Re: merc 115 inline 6 problem

Shawn, On that motor the stator supplies voltage and trigger to the power packs that fire the ignition coils. It could be that you are loosing spark to some of the cylinders, when the motor is warm. You might put an inductive timing light on each spark plug wire, when you have this problem, and determine if all are getting spark. You could also look at the spark plugs to see if any are wetter than the others, indicating an ignition problem. Once you find out which plugs loose spark (if any) you cand start testing for heat-related failures of the coils, power packs, triggers and stator. Since these components are expensive, make sure you got the culprit.

A friends merc started doing that. Turned out to be the switchbox.

Shawn, Do a search for "Troubleshooting ADI Ignition" on the board. You can also go to some other boards and ignition parts manufacturers and find the procedure. If the problem is heat-related, it may be hard to find

The CDI Electronics website has a great troubleshooting guide.

This is patently incorrect. Note the year of the motor in question.

Aint the first time I've been wrong, just did a Force Stator (I know, different animal) that would simply drop spark, kick back, drop..dropped a power pack finally. Have that of my mind. Simply slowing down could be a carb thing on the Merc, but like all questions like this, its a guess..
