76 50hp which stators will fit?

I just got a pull start '76 50hp 4 cyl ser#7069013 (Canada).
Starter has been added along with remote keyswitch and choke button with only 5' lead. I will remove these and install them in the control housing which right now has an empty hole for choke and kill/run switch instead of key.
I will need to find a choke solenoid and plunger and rewire controls from 2 wire to 6 wire. I guess any 50 hp choke will work?
The real problem I have is trying to determine which stator #'s will fit and what is the difference between them?
I see black ones and red ones on ebay but I don't know which model applies to my engine.
Oldmercs says a 398-832075A20 will fit but are there any other choice's, as oem, this part is over $500 Cdn. As well, are there any other parts I need to swap in order to make this motor charge such as the trigger plate or can I leave the original alone? I know I will need a rectifier.
Thanks so much.

Thanks for the infomation Laddies. You didn't specifically say but are you saying those part numbers work for all 50hp or just for his 76. I would think there might be a range on that.

I'm interested if those numbers would also fit a 1971. Even though mine may never go out, a stator is an item I wouldn't want to be searching for when I really need one. They can really be pricey.

Just ADI 50-45-40 HP 4cyl engines

Laddies, you're talking over my head here. I'm assuming ADI means alternator driven ignition. If so, I guess my 71 Merc 500 does not fit into that category because I thought the ignition driver on my motor supplies the spark instead of the alternator.

So, in other words, simple words that I can understand, are you saying those various stator part numbers will not fit my 1971 50hp?

pman7, sorry mto confuse you but your right I am talking about alternator driven CD. Your 71 has driver ign on it that is powered by two small coils in the driver (The thing that looks like a mag) the stator under the flywheel only charges the battery. hope this helps -Bob

Re: 76 50hp which stators will fit?

Thanks Laddies! I have found a CDI#174-5454K1 but it has the tigger coils mounted 180* from each other on opposite sides of the stator. The one on there now only has 2 coils and they are close together facing forward. Are you sure these are interchangable?
What about the 398-832075(A20) will others with different suffixes work as well? like A7, A19, A14 etc?

Re: 76 50hp which stators will fit?

My CDI catalog calls for 174-5454K1 for 4cyl engines 1976 to 1991 but the high and low speed winding are next to each other as far as trigger winding on the stator there are none the trigger is a anouther winding that operates off the inside ring on the flywheel hub, so I really don't understand what your discribing. No the other numbers won't work, goto the CDI/Rapair web site and ck for yourself

Re: 76 50hp which stators will fit?

Sorry Laddies, I meant the high and low speed coils. Here is a pic.
Second pic is CDI # 174 - 5454K1.
" Will Fit 3 & 4 Cylinders Motors 40 Hp. To 80 Hp"
Notice the difference where the coils are located.
The fellow selling this one on ebay says "the one i have will not work , the 398-832075A7 has the kit for converting it over and i beleive that is the one you need to convert it over"
Do you know what this "KIT" contains? Oldmercs says 398-832075A20 is right.
I have also posted pics of an A21 and an A22. Can you tell me the difference?
The red stator is "SIERRA PART #18-5870. THIS IS A 30-125 HORSEPOWER ITEM WHICH REPLACES MERCURY PART #'S 398-832075 A4-A21"
Boats.net lists Sierra # 18-5874 or CDI 174-5454 as correct. I wonder if this is different from the CDI 5454K1 ?
What is the difference between the red one ond the black ones?
I heard the red one is an upgrade but why?
I am so confused especially since my cdn ser# does not match up with anything on the dealers page for reference.
Thanks so much for your help.

Re: 76 50hp which stators will fit?

OK lets try to make this siimple, your CAN.# 7069013 is the same as the US run of engines from 4357640 to 4576257. As far as picture # 2 that is not a 174-5454K1 and I can't speak for your online freinds. All I can tell you is we sell several stators for the 44 cu. in. engine a year and that is the stator we use, it's the one CDI/Rapairs manual calls for, as far as other sellers who ever they are or what selling I can't speak for them or thier products. They may be selling reboxed products or show the wrong pictures of thier product. The conversion kit is made available because Mercury stators were junk and it was thier easy way out thier problem

Re: 76 50hp which stators will fit?

Thanks for clearing that up for me Laddies.
Wrong picture makes sense.
Still curious what's included in the "KIT" is it more than just the stator.
Or is it just a better stator.
Thanks again.
