Hi,

I'm looking for a generator kit for my '61 Evinrude Lark 3. It has an electric starter but no generator which is a bum because now the battery won't charge while boating so I have to charge it at home and also risk getting stuck with a dead battery, and I can say from experience that hand starting a cold 40hp is no joke..

If anyone could direct me to a good store that could supply me the correct kit I would be very gratefull.

Thanks!

Alex

very expensive if you could find one. by yourself a float charger, that stays plugged in all the time. not a trickle charger.

Alex, I had one of those 40HP electric start/no generator motors. The motor is magneto, and the battery would last a couple of weeks usage, without recharge. In addition, I found it easy to pull start.

Try tcoutboard.com, won't be cheap if available. Consider a solar charger. Twenty bucks at Harbor Freight.

I was going to suggest a solar cell also. I used one last year on my sailboat to keep the bilge pump battery charged and it lasted all season without replacing it as I had a constant leak thus is was running every few hours. They're getting pretty cheap these days. And even if it doesn't last the summer it'll certainly extend the time between charges. And not wanting to point out the obvious but an engine in good tune that starts right away will also go longer bewteen charges... :)

also the use of a high CCA battery will help. i use a group 27 1150 on my 90hp. it's more battery than necessary, for my motor, but i don't have to worry if i flood it.

Also be aware that a generator doesn't do any real charging except at 3/4 to full throttle.(actually neither does an alternator on an outboard). And the charging is very little.

The good part is you are certainly not using a 1961 battery, just the motor. Todays batteries have it way over even the 1990's batteries.

IF you are only using the battery to start that motor a few times a day,it may seldom need charging. If you run a radio for a couple hours, you should be OK.

But don't plan on running things with motors.CD player is in the list.I think you know trolling motors are OUT.
