2001 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro

I have a 2001 Jonhson 150 Ocean pro, can anyone tell me if these motors idle ruff. When im in a no wake zone and have the throttle back on idle it runs around 950 to 1000 rpms but seems to be running ruff shaking ect. Comming out of the no wake zone and going WOT its very strong and smooth, planes out in about 5 -6 seconds and runs 4950 rpms about 43 mph. The boat is a 19.5 cc prosport and im just concerned about the ruff idleing dont want to hurt it any. Thanks

Your engine is overpropped, it should be turning close to 5500 rpm with an average load in the boat.

Check the throttle roller, many times the outer soft plastic covering breaks off.

There is an adjustment called "sync and link" that makes sure the spark advance and the throttles open up at the exact same time. If that is incorrect, the motor runs rough just above idle. This is explained in the factory service manual, or have a trained tech check it out.

You could also have carburetor or recirculation valve problems, but those normally affect the idle also.

Thanks for the info, what would be the proper size and pitch prop for this motor? I have no idea whats on it now. When its in neutural it idels fine nice and smooth when you shift it in to foward and just idle it has a shake to it, bring it up to 1500 and it seems to be fine, wot and its smooth as silk. You have to find out what prop you have now and want to get the same style with 2" less pitch for approximately a 400 rpm increase. For example if you had a 19" prop, you would want to replace it with a 17" prop.

I have a 2001 Ocean pro 2 stroke. Yep!! They run a little ruff around 1000. Once in a while shoot some sea foam through the idle jets (see manual for location). They should be in the middle, left side, of the carbs intake/mouth. It's a little brass orifice. Helps it run a little smoother on the low end.
As far as the prop goes....try a SST 14.75 x 17 omc cupped prop. I had the same problem. THat engine has a hard time pushing a 19p.

Here is a great deal. I got mine from these guys on ebay. Saved me 150 beans. The factory prop runs around 400. They have them for 250.00.

I have 2 of those style motors now and have had several others. If they run rough and shake, somethings wrong. That motor is capable of idleing at 500 rpm in gear and should be very smooth.

If it were mine I'd start with the basics and make sure it's running on all 6. If you have one dead cylinder it'll act just as you describe. Lousy idle, even though it's set pretty high and lacking on top rpm. 950-1000 at idle, in gear is very hard on the gears when you shift into gear (if it idles in gera at 950 it should be about 1200 out of gear) and it should be pretty hard to shift out even if the shift intruppter is working. Mine idle so low and steady we don't even use the shift intruppter.

If it is running on all 6 I'd look at the set up to gain rpm before spending money on a prop. Reducing pitch almost always reduces efficiency. The only situation it would help is if you were very, very over propped and needed to reduce pitch by 6 inches or so.

Ditto....why the high idle? You had the boat long? Sounds like she needs some TLC....people tend to idle up an engine to cover problems that are easily fixed...

i have the same make model year and HP outboard and my stock prop was 15x 17 so there a good chance that waht you have right now

I have a 200 my motor does the same and then again at2100 or so i have an ss race prop on it when i put it on is when it started but i dont care it is bad a** now but that might not be ur prob just keep ridin til it breaks unless u bring it to a service tech u can spend a lot of money tring this and that

Iam having the same problem changed part#0586343 sensor ay $71.59 this helped with the stalling at this point and have not done this is pull carbs and pay extra notice to slow speed jet... Dont want to do this may wait take chance because the motor has never left me stranded eaven 36 miles from the mouth of port canaveral...also i have water sep and new fuel lines good luck hope someone can help u
