When I was an elementary school student in Miami, I experianced the rapid transformation of my city from english to Spanish , thanks to Castro and the "Mariel boat lift". Tho it was 45 years ago, I recall the madatory spanish classes as little more than an hour added to my werkday.
Well, after a long protruded battle, I surrender. I bought a Spanish language learning package last night. It has reached a level of risk to my personal safety on te job, and a detrement to public safety.
Some of you may have seen the pics of the loader on it's ear that I posted recently?

Well, I don't oversee these crews on a directive level, I'M just Q.C. and public safety on this project. Even so, it doesn't take much to see the risks America has exposed itself to by ignoring our pourous borders and our basic "liberty-for-all" doctrine.
I do not think one has to absolutely pick up a firearm and blow our American heads off -- They just have to be oblivous to what we are saying to them -- stuff like "drop the bucket!!! Drop it drop it!!!!"
My DESIRE to learn this new language is as unatural today as it was 45years ago. But it's not "play-time" I look forward to any longer after werk, either. The stakes are far higher.

I hope for your sake the course you ordered is better than the course that I took. The one that I got was about ten cassettes, I had it in the truck and it was stated that I could learn as I drove, all it did was make me sleepy and had this desire for tequila when I stopped to rest/sleep. Seriously if I lived where you did I definitely would take one, I wouldn?t think it should not be any harder that learning the code.

I agree it just aint correct (Can't say right or it will be considered political).

I had read about a ciminal that was let out of jail to give his son a kidney transplant. He booked and headed to Mexico. Our U.S. Marshalls found him and had Mexico return him. My question is HUH? A Mexican national can come over here and kill, return to his country and nothing can be done.

Besides, why would illegals want to become citizens if all their medical and assistance programs work in their favor now? If I was them, No Way I would want to become a citizen of the US and then have to pay the taxes like all the rest. Then they would loose their benefits. Duhhhh

With what is going on now with us is no different than in the middle east. The middle east does not want to lose their customs and traditions. While we try to force our ideas and beliefs on them, Mexico is doing the same to us. The only difference is we are not using bloodshed to get our point across like the middle east is.

Good Luck on learning your Spanish 12er,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,SS

Good call 12, rather than just being bullheaded and insisting everyone speak English, which isn't going to happen, it makes sense to pick up a second language yourself if it makes your job and life easier and safer. You might see other benefits as well like the stimulus of continued learning. Many studies have correlated continued adult learning with improved mental health in adult and senior years. Learning a new language really excercises the brain and might even open a window into the culture for you. And you'll know when they're talkin' smack about ya too :D

I've been thinking along those same lines 12er.

I have been impressed with the ads for "Rosetta Stone" on the tube. Anyone had experience that supports or contradicts their claims?

Doens't Sesame St still do bi-lingual stuff?

Here in VT the spanish is just about useless. Our 2d language on signs here is french for the Canadians. I watch the spanish channels on my satellite dish when the have Boxeo (boxing).

As strange as this sounds if you can fnd a spanish fishing partner you would learn faster and learn the correct slang. Formal tapes and programs always brag about "conversational" but the spanish they teach is "proper"..... a good spanish fishing partner should do it. .... as long as the Mrs does not find out.

I am of couse talking about a Spanish fishing partner about 25 years old with dark eyes, dark hair and no husband:D

I don't understand why the Spanish speaking population just didn't adopt English as their language before they became the majority in many areas.Well, maybe I do understand/comprende.The down side to bilingual operations in any situation is the added confusion of interpreting now two languages instead of a common one. There's enough innacuracy with second and third hand information as it is.But I guess a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do. Frankly I don't think the Spanish language is as descriptive a language as English.I mean without just adopting another language term and placing an 'o' at the end of it.
