I just put carb kits on my 1971 johnson 50hp and it started up good... then started to miss. then died.. ran for about 5 min good. Now when I crank it over and put the electric choke on fuel runs out of the carbs and out of a line that runs from the head to the breather cover. Follwed the instructions to the letter on the kits also replaced all the fuel lines...the boat has set for 5 yrs in a barn..... any thoughts would be appreciated...Thanks

Even a tiny little bit of gunk on that needle valve will cause it not to close. Open it up and spray it out good with carb cleaner. Be sure to set the float level as per the manual while you're at it.

Did you put in the new needle valve and seat from the carb kit?

Yes i put the new valves and seats in both carbs as per the instuctions with the kits ...The only thing I couldnt do was get the nylon bearing out of the two low speed idle valves..the manual said it could be rebuilt with out taking those out.

Well i took off the carbs and cleaned the needle and seat and double checked the float level I got it started but its missing a lot and its hard to start Is there any way to get the nylon bearing out off the two low speed idle valves? The selco manual says to rig a paper clip to pull them out but i tried for like two hours and couldnt...could this be the miss? I set the valves according to the manual...both in till they seat then out 5/8 off a turn

Raid your wife's sewing box for a crochet hook. Or go to Wal Mart and buy one. That's pronounced Crow-Shay for us dummies.

Well I re set my float level and cleaned out the carbs again it runs like a champ!!! i was doing all of this adjusting with air breather assembly off... a friend told me since it has no high speed adjustment the air fuel mixture is determined by the resistance of the air flow into the breather??? sounds weird but it runs fine with air breather box on ...but stalls out and dies with box off...thanks for all your help... we will see this weekend opn keystone lake
