I have a 1972 14ft Aluminum Starcraft with a 9.9hp motor. This motor does not push the boat very good. I would like to know if anyone knows the max horse power might be for this boat. There is no plate on the boat to refrence.

Jay, If you match the boat's length and width to a newer model with a capacity plate, you should get a good idea. I'l bet it is between 15-25 HP.

While a 15 surely will do better than the 9.9.The 9.9 should be able to do 19 or 20 mph with careful weight distribution and a light load.If you rig or buy tiller extension so you can sit on the middle seat that would help.
Also if you raise the motor vertically 1/4 inch at a time till just before ventilation becomes a problem you may pick up some speed.Just be sure it pumps water.

this is a 1960 14' lonestar w/ 1955 15hp evinrude. center seat controls, and stick steering. with me alone, it was one of the most fun boats i ever owned. right at 30mph. just a lot of fun to run around in. wasn't afraid of rough water. sorry i sold it. offer i couldn't refuse.

I have an old 14' starcraft and the rating plate is for 20hp.

My 18 pushes it w/o any problem and it's a 1967. The older outboards were rated for hp at the powerhead and the newer ones are rated at the prop. A new model 18hp would probably be even faster.
