Re: electramatic shift throttle box wiring

You got me confused by now. Is your motor a '62 40hp? The original for a '62 40hp would not have the white wires. The white wires are for the start in neutral part of the switch. That was used on high horsepower models such as 100hp, and Inboard-Outboard Stern drives. The 40hp has a safety switch on the motor and does not need another one in the control.

But you can use the one with white wires, just don't connect the white ones.

Make sure the other control switch function matches your motor. There are two basic types. Electromatic and Hydro-Electric. They look alike but are different. Using a Hydro-Electric switch on an Electromatic can damage the lower unit in an instant.

That's not what was shipped with the motor from the factory.

Don't hurry things. Go slowly and deliberately. Read FR's post again. Do it wrong and you can destroy the lower unit. That does not mean "hook it up and hopefully it will work".

If memory serves me you have a green wire and a blue wire coming out of the lower unit. The entire unit is grounded (12V-). The motor is in neutral when no voltage is applied to either wire. 12V+ to the green wire puts you into Forward. 12V+ to the blue wire puts you into reverse. 12V+ to both wires puts you into both forward and reverse at the same time and if the motor's running you just destroyed the lower unit. You DO NOT want to have to rebuild that lower unit!

Test the controller you have to make sure it's set up that way.

That control might have been installed by the boat builder. But that does not matter. What matters is the switch. Get yourself a test light or meter and check the continuity of the wires in various shift positions. There should be continuity between the purple and green when in forward, between purple and blue in reverse and no contiuity between nuthin in neutral. If it passes the test you are good to go.

Re: electramatic shift throttle box wiring

I recently acquired a 1967 Johnson 40 Hp electamatic on an old boat. The control has been taken apart and some parts may be missing. Is there a manual available with an illistrated parts breakdown? The engine appears to be in fairly good condition from outward appearances so I think it is worth some effort to repair. The boat is another question, 1967 Stinger I think not sure yet on how to proceed with it.
