i am not sure where to post this . but you guys have helped me a great deal . my boat has now been in the shop 4 months next week it was going to be a winter project. since sat the motor is complete execpt for alt.now its getting into the season. i have talked to the shop owner a few times and he said as fast as he can do it. my bill is high. but its not the price its the quality of the service. i feel he might take 2 or more weeks plus the drive is still off. it has a new long block swap only with all rusty motor parts replaced. you name it i got it..i was going to wait to friday and if my alt.. is still laying next to the motor i think i am going to tell him to put in all in abox and take his alt back . and remove my boat from his shop. now all these shop jobs are getting put in front of me and i am paying full price. any advice i know this is a weird question but i am pissed and i am a nice guy and he is killing me.
i made a bad choice here.
please help. i am not sure where to post this

4 months and counting? you should have pulled out long ago

walk in the shop and take your boat to another shop - pronto

Re: don bond-o need advice

go over and beat them up. of course not. just advice because i made the mistake by choosing a merc dealer who is jacking around
the 2nd advice to remove my boat is what i been thinking of doing as i have no real place to work on it . but i am tired (real tired ) of the b/s. i ask don because i value his thought as he is a tech. and gives great advice ad does bondo and others. it would have been alot nicer for someone who has 5k in posts to say something nicer and more helpful as i am a pro at what i do. and if you asked me that question i would have gave you an answer that would not be so childlike. i am in a jam and really did not want to post this in the repair section. i am with the tystick guy(thank you) in removing the boat from him and finishing it myself or taking it somewhere else.
any advice would be nice
thanks guys

Sorry if you can't take a little humor....:p
You should have pulled your boat out a long time ago & found another shop or did the work yourself....
How's this.....
IF YOU WANT THE BOAT IN THE WATER - DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO!
I'M SURE THAT DON & BONDO WILL HELP WITH ADVICE IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF, BUT THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE.......

hey bob,

your welcome - if you can do it yourself then have at it but that begs the question as to why you took it to a merc dealer. if it is because no place to work - then i understand - ask around and find a shop that can do it but now it is in parts so you will get hit to clean up the mess
at any rate - xmas is coming :)
good luck and let us know how you make out

Re: don bond-o need advice

also my marina which i pay storage for has an i-beam lift i could check wed. to see if they would let me use it. the local town has owned the marina. but before it was private owen and they let you use it. i hate to take the boat from him but what if i got a bad rebuild. ??then what 4 more months. my buddy worked for recon mfg. it said on rebuilt motors. dont quote the #'s but it was 3% defects from mfg. and like 7% for a bad install. what if he gave me a bad install???
thankfully its a gm motor and not a bmw or odd ball

Re: don bond-o need advice

Haut Medoc . thanks i would have paid 2k xtra to get it done faster. i just wanted this sites great advice as now he's doing all the cake work and my alt. as been sitting on the groung since sat. i will get amno and talk to him friday and make a decision that day. i am 45 and have learned a giant lesson. that motor is cake compared to what i have did all my life . i have replaced auto trans in toyota mr'2 . installed 350 in my 71 chevelle. i just was thinking boats were harder . but they are just different. i have put timing belts on 6cyl 24 valve motors. as i am very handy . my choice to have shop do it was peace of mine(wrong) less wear and tear on my body as i get older. i been working on cars since 9 yrs old and am tired of doing that. was hoping i could do the fun stuff . radio. duel battery's water pump. all those nice little projects

Re: don bond-o need advice

If you don't have a place to work on it and your wanting to find someone else to do the work, find a mechanic BEFORE you say anything to the shop about wanting to take the boat somewhere else. Also if your going to take it DO NOT fore warn them, just show up and get it. Wouldn't want the to do anything to in the heat of aggravation.

Re: don bond-o need advice

reel poor thats why i posted this here . you advice is very good as . i get worked up over this. i starting searching last night for a shop and i am going to my marina today. we have a couple of great retired guys who run it during the week. my buddys, not mechanic's but ork for the town i will see if they still have the giant engine hoist and ask can i use it . and if all works out right. i will pull it out of the shop the way you said. its not about the money. its about the way the whole process is. what if my dist. is in wrong . wrong tourqe on the bolts. wires wrong as the young fellow sat had the book out.but still did not put the alt in as . he jumped off the motor again.
i got $2500 down and owe $1000. with these #'s they spent about $700 in parts. but i look at it as that's 3500. they got my drive .the boats been sitting there 4 months and 2 months to get into the shop.he should have charged me $4500 and knocked it out. i am so sick of it that i wish i would have brought a complete drop in motor as i would have.i will keep the boat a long time so i dont care about losing money. i want to enjoy the water.

as don s says how come we have time to do it right the second time but not the first...not the exeact words. but all so true.
even if the price would have been higher. maybe i need a trim pump. boats been sitting. rams. rebuilt drive. i would never have said i payed to much . i would have said. its clean and buff time and i am almost ready to go.
its a cool boat had lots of boats not an exbert. second inboard. i will have about 8500.00 in the boat boat motor trailer

Re: don bond-o need advice

was at my marina today and they are under total construction. no docks in. boat ramp sand baged and blocked. they have a lift which i can use and with all the term oil going on thier i am afraid of using it as they are distracted . because the army corps. of eng. gave the company doing the work a 60k fine and the new docks are all over the land. the company they took the bid for as never done this type of work, if its done it 6 weeks it will be great. i can still park my boat their and work on it . but to many town official's are nervous and i i need it to start using their lift now. they might get mad i will check into a different mechanic like reel poor said as when i go to the shop friday and see no work done all week . i got to make a smart decision. i am voting remove it. as he seen me tuesday and he never seen me mad like this and he's not a dumb guy. maybe i lit a fire under him. i will find out. but if a shop gives me a fair price to put in back together i am taking it out. thursday i will seek out one

Re: don bond-o need advice

thanks bondo he meant well busting --- its sad but funny. i will tell you what if when i lived in fla and this guy do that to a country boy(red neck) no offense to anyone. they would have wanted to work him over. but at 45 i try to be more relaxed..that whats got me in trouble. i had a toyota pickup years ago while working at a toyota and the guys laughed at me because i got stuck with a real rusty frame..took up weld in school i did...got half a frame at junk yard after working at cadillac for 10 years. in body shop. i welded and fitted that truck together after removing the bed and drove it 5 years and sold it for a profit. so as you say do it yourself

update

when i went in the shop tuesday, i seen the boat sitting and motor on the stringer mounts on the blocks, i said to the guy , i dont belive it and left and shook my head. today i went back to plan to remove the boat. i think he knows i am really pissed. i walked thur the shop towards the engine and did not see it. went in the front door, he said he ran motor and its in the baot. i went back in the shop . i just walked past my boat...i did not even notice it..the front mounts were not installed yet but engine was in. and he said it ran great. next he has to complete the water pump and presure test the drive. he said he will shoot some boats ahead of me as they are quick jobs. so i made some progress i am really happy no. but i figure 2 more weeks
