Re: 93 Mercury 20 HP dies

1. No harm in running seafoam all of the time, on the contrary I and most of the others on this board would recommend it.

2. If you let your engine sit for long periods of time between uses, make sure you have a fuel stabilizer in the gas or your carbs are going to gum up. Seafoam also acts as a fuel stabilizer so no problem there.

3. Seafoam will keep the fuel fresh during the winter.

4. No need to add stabilizer if Seafoam is already in the tank.

As you can see, Seafoam is a wonderful product and I would recommend using it wholeheartedly, not just in outboards, anything with an engine.

That is fantastic news for me. I ran out at lunch and was able to find SeaFoam at the local auto parts store ... hopefully I'll get a chance to run some through the motor this weekend.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Update on 93 Merc 20 HP... Have run 2 cans Seafoam thru over the last week without success. Still dies down when throttle is opened in gear. I guess I'll have to tackle taking the carb off and rebuilding unless someone has another idea.

I am inclined to believe it most likely is a bad fuel pump diaphragm. Is it much of a job to replace?

Not the fuel pump diaphragm... float was stuck in carb and engine loaded up & died when throttle was opened. Pulled fuel line off of carb and ran engine to empty carb and then sprayed carb full of Gum-Out carb cleaner and let sit a few minutes. Reconnected fuel line and started engine. Problem gone without removing and rebuilding carb.

Excellent, congrats on finding the solution.

I am able to get out on the lake this week (weather permitting) and this weekend as well. Hope to be able to solve my issue in a similar fashion. I have added the seafoam to the tank and have the Deep Creap at the ready.

Re: 93 Mercury 20 HP dies

Very basic question here.

With the motor **NOT** running, should I expect the carbs to open/close when I put it in gear and push on the throttle?

... or is this a function of a motor when its running?

I am afraid the answer will be that it SHOULD be opening/closing the carbs, and it does not. This would explain the issue I am having.

A quick bit of searching shows me that I should probably start looking at the "linkage" adjustments in my manual.
