Hello all, I did some searching but never found answers to my questions so here goes. I am a year owner of a well taken care of (I.M.O.) 92 Bayliner Capri with a 4.3L Mercruiser I/O after winter storage and in the water for the first time this season, it is kinda slow or doggy it seems. I put it in the water last night checked good for leaks, none. Figured next step would be to start it up, after a long time of cranking and waiting I'd say maybe 10 times of this it finally made signs that ok I am going to run and then maybe within the next 5 attempts it did finally start and stay running. I had put the throttle all the way open a couple times in there, but after finally getting it to start it was in the normal idle spot, to give it any throttle would cause it to immediately die, a few more attempts and it stayed running fine.:)

I let it get warm and then figured I'd work some of the bugs out of it and take it out on the water. (wife, & daughter with me) It didn't have good take off like last year, the boat was winterized at a boat dealers shop, so they should no how to do the winterization!! It did finally get up to top speed and semi mellowed out. Do I need dry gas, do I need carb cleaned, what about spark plugs, & other maint type things? All these questions I've asked myself but was looking for a little help from the pros on this forum.

Next concern is while going through channels, and around others I know that you are not to create a wake. (wife, daughter, & self included took a boaters safety class last year) The boat creates a wake when it is idleing along and I am told to slow down  yet others end up going around me without creating the wake I seem to be, do I need something different, prop, trim tab. I do have a hard plastic fin shaped thing that is bolted on top of the outdrive does this cause this?

Sorry for the long story and thanks for any help or advice you can give

Your dealer or marine mechanic may have winterized your boat last fall but now it needs to bee summerized in order to be ready to be put back into serivce.

As for the wake at your boat may be producing at idle, I'm not sure that the hydrofoil fin on your drive is the culprit. Could be hull design, number of person(s) gear onboard, idle speed etc.

PS: Are other boaters telleing you "Slow Down" or is it the family member with you on you boat?

Thank you for the response yes yesterday before putting the boat out, I did call my Marina that did the winterization. He said nothing needs to be done, just put it in the water and check everything over while it is still on the trailer, lift the engine lid check for leaks there and in the floor compartments:confused: make sure steering, trim work start r up and go. Well it was almost that easy. Just a little slow on the go. Their are three of us on board, yes the wife always thinks I have to much wake, or am going too fast, the kid doesn't and I am still being passed by other boaters when possible. People on shore have also said slowdown..

Its a 175 so that means 17' 5" if my homework is correct

if you are carrying water in the foam, unfortunately, bayliners of that vintage, are known for it. you're going to be heavy and throw a bid wake. when in slow zone trim the outdrive all the way down, so it lifts the stearn, if trimmed up it's going to push it down, and increase the wake.

when you say it does not have good takeoff - is the engine not responding - or could be not trimmed?

I thought the vintage for the bayliner hull issues was earlier like 1985.

Well the "Foam" that you are referring to, I haven't seen any of that, is it visible or no? The links to the images above can you tell me where to look:confused: On take off this season only it kinda coughs a little on a car I would describe it as missing under load.

After it got on plane it seemed to smooth out but just not the same gitty up.

When they winterized it i bet they fogged the engine and did not replace the spark plugs. Pull a plug and see how they look. Also was it stored with a full tank of fuel? if not you could have water in the fuel.If it has a water seperator filter change it and fill the boat with fresh gas..

Yes it does have a full tank, & I paid to have them Sta-bil the fuel, I assume they did it,

I bought Dry-Gas today haven't poured it in yet, kinda wanted more suggestions.

I was thinking about getting fuel filter but haven't looked at where it is on the engine yet? Kinda want to see if this is something I can do????

Spark Plugs, I've replaced them on my 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass a few times (231 engine), but what would my 4.3 Mercruiser take for plugs, and are they easily accessible?

another stupid ? how do I stop from having to log in everytime I try to post???

Re: New guy w/ concerns

Not sure why it makes you log in each time.
The spark plugs should be easy unless the engine compartment is very small. Do one at a time so you don't get the wires mixed up.
You can get the marine plugs from Napa, AC brand MR43T i think on that engine, napa can look them up in the book. Gap is .035
Instead of the dry gas get a can of Seafoam fuel treatment sold at about any auto parts store. The fuel seperator filter if it has one should be on the left front side of the engine near the fuel pump.It looks like an oil filter..

Re: New guy w/ concerns

I really doubt you are waterlogged. Your difficulty starting and keeping it running points to other problems. My guess is it is going to be a fuel problem but you should go ahead and change spark plugs, check for moisture inside your distributor cap...etc.

Change all your fuel filters.

The gas drier you bought will have isopropyl alcohol in it so you can use it. The Stabil that was put in your tank also has alcohol in it as well.
