1988 'Rude 70 VRO, Fuel Pump Replacement

I need to replace the fuel pump on my 1988 Evinrude 70 VRO. Current pump is the VRO pump, but the oil side of the VRO was disabled and I'm mixing the gas. My plan is to replace the VRO with a straight-up fuel pump. Anybody know the part number for the right fuel pump? Any additional advice?

Also, my diagnosis is fuel pump because the motor won't stay running unless I squeeze the bulb to maintain fuel pressure. Bulb does get hard when motor is not running. Anything else I should check or am I correct in replacing the fuel pump right off the bat?

Thanks for any help.

Pony up the extra cash and get a new VRO unit. They are very reliable and are much less hassle. Read the threads in this forum for some good info.:)

if running built in tank check vent, and pickup in tank. sometimes the get dirty. you can blow air into the fill tube and check vent.

Neither one of your two tests will tell you if the fuel pump is good or not. You have to check the pump pressure between the fuel pump and the carburetors with a gauge.

Your motor came with a VRO2. After those OMC stopped using the variable mixer. You already should have the best of the VRO pumps.

If you want the pump that is specifically for premix and has no oil side, but looks like a VRO, the part # is 0438402.

BTW, make sure that the pulse limiter for your pump is blue, not black. - part 435009.

Thanks very much for the part #. I should have thought about the pressure test. I'll do that and also check the fuel pick up and line before replacing the pump.

Also, the remote oil tank is no longer in the boat so replacing the VRO pump with oil would be a real hassle (and costly). Thanks for the responses!
